Product Review: Chino Cooper Jacket

Chino Cooper Jacket
Item 96789
Regular: $98.00 (now $78.00)

I have been lusting after this jacket for some time. I actually was contemplating purchasing it at full price. (To be honest, I was surprised to see it being offered at $98 to begin with. Most of J.Crew's jackets seem to be in the $100-$200 regular price range.) When the jacket was on promotion, I gave in and got this jacket in british khaki (although I was strongly considering the bright rhubarb as well- and who knows- I still might!) ;)

This jacket is gorgeous and I am really happy with the purchase. First, sizing. I ordered a size 0 (I am normally a size 0-2). The size 0 could be a little bit more fitted on me (although it really is minimal). Second, the entire jacket is lined. I don't know why the website mentions the "bodice is lined" only, as the sleeves are lined as well. Third, the pockets. Although the jacket has faux patch pockets, the real pockets are cleverly hidden on the vertical seems of the front jacket. (Which makes putting your hands in the pockets a lot more convenient.) Fourth, I love the inverted back pleats on the jacket. They really add that feminine touch on such a lovely jacket. Fifth, the buttons. (I have a thing about buttons. I just like the extra detail that they bring to clothes.) This jacket has really great round buttons that are super cute! Overall, I really do like this jacket and think it is definitely worth purchasing.

What are your thoughts on the Chino Cooper Jacket? Have you tried this jacket on? Would you love it or leave it? Are you planning to purchase one? If you already own this jacket, please let us know what your review is.

  1. Alexis, i am so glad you like your purchase. I have been thinking about this jacket since i saw it posted. It seems very cute and from your review, true to size. Both colors appeal to me, the rhubarb even more so. I wondered about the material, sort of a shiny cotton or distressed? Also, I noticed the high waist. With the pleats, how does the back rest? Does it fall gently or potentially protrude if you have a bit of an ample backside (like me)? :)

  2. alexis: i have been eyeing this jacket for a while too but haven't bought it since i have a kenneth cole one from a few years ago that is similar. but it sounds like this is a great classic jacket that has wonderful details...it's great to hear that the sleeves are lined too! do you remember jcrew's chino colette jacket? it also was fully lined and has great details. i have it in navy and it's one of my favorites :)

  3. I love this jacket. I have it in the Bright Rhubarb and think it is so cute with jeans and navy. I agree that the quality is excellent for the price (that is compared to other J. Crew prices). I don't think it protrudes at all, and I also have an ample backside. I ordered a six and I am typically a six or 8P, so I find it true to size. The rhubarb is not shiny (it is a little less color drenched than the rhubarb belle skirt if you have seen that).

  4. I like the jacket and I love the back detailing--however, how about wash and ironing care with all those pleats?...that is what is keeping me from this jacket. (plus, I really like a few other wool ones better)

Also, I own several JCrew cotton jackets and don't need this one...wish it came in other colors...

CCBMUM: I have the chino Colette in tan, navy, and the orange/red color (can't remember what they called their orange/red that year?) It is super cute!

I also have the ruffle trimmed one in tan from last year with the fance tan buttons and the tan chino (Liana??) with the silky tie and ribbon front.

    JCrew makes nice jackets...

  5. Very cute, very flattering silhouette, and a good price, too, particularly for a lined jacket!

  6. I had the Colette as well (it's on loan to my sister which is where all my JC items go that I'm not sure I want to get rid of) and thought that was a great jacket (and fully lined, hello!) as well. The red that year was "Strawberry Ice", I believe.

Thanks for the awesome review, Alexis! It is a very cute jacket, that's for sure. I don't know what's up with them not lining some or all of their jackets (read: Tuesday Trench), especially at the prices they charge for them. If nothing else, the lining just looks better!

  7. Has anyone seen this? So funny, so true. Maybe J-Crew will read and take note.

  8. Yes, about the cotton jackets needing to be lined! I would have really like a lining at least in the body of the Fiona madras jacket.....esp. for the price which I think was $150?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Cleo26: I know what you mean about the ruhbarb color- it is a very pretty shade. (I still may end up getting that color too!) ;) The jacket's back (w/pleats) actually looks quite nice and falls gently. No weird protrusion on my pear shape frame. :)

ccbmum: I do remember the chino colette jacket and thought it was such a great jacket- great material too! :)

Anonymous 4:16 AM: Congrats on the jacket!!! :)

Anonymous at 4:37 AM: I hear you about ironing the pleats. I usually steam dry my clothes- which makes it much easier when it comes to pleats. ;) I also agree with you that J.Crew makes the nicest jackets. I just love their attention to detail. :)

Silver Lining & Anonymous at 6:35 AM: I know what you mean about the lining on some of their jackets! I ended up ordering the Tuesday Trench (after reading all the reviews here) and will be curious to see if I like the lined sleeves only. I don't know why some jackets are just partially lined. :)

  10. alexis: We really do seem to gravitate toward the same items! I also purchased this jacket last week, and actually received it yesterday...this is my *review*. :)

*The UPS man came yesterday, and he brought my Chino Cooper Jacket in British Khaki...YAY!!! I have to say that I am really pleasantly surprised at this J.Crew piece...especially for the price! The quality is excellent, and the Chino fabric feels almost silky...it feels *worn in* like your favorite pair of Chinos, but doesn't have that *worn in* look. I also feel that the picture does not do it justice...it is really pretty and flattering on the body. It can be worn buttoned up or left open, as it looks fabulous either way, and will coordinate with so many pieces that it will definitely be my *go to* jacket, as an alternative to my cardigan. :) I purchased the size 4...it is a little fitted at the shoulders when buttoned up (I have broad shoulders), but the waist would have been too big in a 6, so I went for the smaller size. I will mainly wear it unbuttoned anyways, so it shouldn't be an issue. I would definitely recommend this jacket, especially at it's current *Promotional* price.*

    ReplyDelete
  11. Alexis and FFM: I too ordered this jacket in British Khaki and should be receiving it today!! I love the feminine touches. :)

    ReplyDelete
  12. I totally agree with FFM and Alexis. I received mine in British Khaki yesterday and was so pleasantly surprised at the fit and material. This will definitely be my go to jacket for the fall. I too find it to be true to size.

If you have lusted over this jacket, go ahead and get it while on promotion. I don't think you will be disappointed.

  13. OT (sorry)- has anyone bought anything in the maize color? i am debating between a sweater in this or the honey glaze. the HG seems more unique to me, although the maize cardi in the catalog is very pretty too. is it extremely neon-bright like the recent yellows?

ok on topic now. this jacket seems like a great deal! i cant really justify another jacket right now as i live in a warm climate, but i am happy to see jcrew offering a good quality jacket at such a reasonable price. i bought a linen jacket 2 years ago (i think it was the adelaide) back when i paid full price more often, and i can hardly ever bring myself to wear it, the fit is so boxy and the material wrinkles so easily.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Melissa,
You just nailed my lament about linen. It looks great when I walk out the door, but after five minutes of driving, hello wrinkles. There was a pretty linen suit J.Crew offered this summer (i think they called it baird mcnutt linen) and I was tempted by it, until I reminded myself it was linen :-)

I'm not a huge chino wearer (almost never, actually), but I'm glad to read these reviews - if I trip across this jacket on sale later, these glovwing reviews make me want to try it :-)

    ReplyDelete
  15. oops, I meant glowing. Still waiting for the coffee to take effect ... :-)

    ReplyDelete
  16. Alexis: Sounds like a great jacket for you. For myself, I am not a huge fan of chino jackets. They just wrinkle too easily (even when they are fully lined). But maybe this one is different. I was happy to hear that it was fully lined because it made absolutely no sense to me why someone would buy a fall jacket that wasn't fully lined. Congrats on your purchase I bet the cut is extremely flattering

    ReplyDelete
  17. Alexis, FFM, anyone else who owns the jacket... Would you say it is warm enough to wear as your "outerwear" on a cool spring day? I have a wool jacket from JCrew that I feel silly wearing in the Spring, but it's still chilly out so I need something! I thought the Tuesday Trench would fit that purpose, but to me it didn't seem warm enough; it seemed more like an "indoors"/fashion jacket, rather than really "outerwear". I was sad about that since it was beautiful. I'd appreciate your thoughts!

    ReplyDelete
  18. meg: Although mine is not here yet, I do plan on wearing it in both the Fall and Spring since it is fully lined. I live near Pittsburgh, PA if that helps to give you an idea about the weather in my area.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Meg- Thanks for your take on the Tuesday Trench - I was thinking of ordering it for a fall / spring jacket as I HATE being cold and a wool coat seems a little silly, but I don't think I will now - I'll just layer instead!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Grrr... this website is an enabler! I have this in my shopping cart and now I HAVE to pull the trigger. Glad you love the jacket Alexis--I am getting the same one. We'll all be twins when we wear it.

    ReplyDelete
  21. SS--I hope this jacket is something you were thinking about already...I don't let this website influence me as to whether to make a purchase or not...I think it is here to help us make decisions on items we are comtemplating purchasing already or if we really need something than to take the plunge....

    ReplyDelete
  22. OT. Do stores still run 40% off final sales items? Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I'd be so curious to learn how sales spike for an item after Alexis features it w/a postive review...is there an Aficionada Effect?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Melissa, i bought the ruffle merino cardigan in maize and really like the color. I prefer the maize to the honey glaze because i don't like the greenish tint in the latter. The maize is not neon but it is bright. On a spectrum i would say the maize, while yellow, is closer to the orange tendency than the green and is less subdued than honey glaze. Honey glaze looks more wintery to me. Then again, i like bright colors.

Not sure if i am able to pull the maize color off in a formal business environment....

Those who have the jacket, do you think the Cooper could be worn in a business environment? I guess i couldn't pull off in rhubarb, huh? What are you planning to wear this piece with?

  26. I live in SC and plan on wearing this jacket in the fall and spring. There can be a 30 degree difference from morning to afternoon during these seasons so this jacket will be perfect. I also am planning on wearing it to work. I do work in a more casual office where chinos and jeans can be worn on a daily basis. The nature of my job, and my fashion style, requires me to wear something a bit nicer. This jacket will be great with a pencil skirt or even slacks.

I would be interested to see what FFM is putting together with this jacket. (Hint, hint)

    ReplyDelete
  27. cleo26: I think you could wear the Cooper jacket in a Business environment, and it is perfect for making a casual outfit a little more dressy, too. I have made a few sets using the jacket: Click Here , Here , Here , and Here. .

    ReplyDelete
  28. Those of you who have or have seen the cooper...how does it compare to the Porta that is on sale? I am trying to decide between the two. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  29. meg: What is the normal temp for a Spring day where you live? I live in Florida, so it will be plenty warm here, as well as in the Fall...however, in other states where the weather is a lot cooler, you would definitely want to layer it with a turtleneck or sweater underneath, IMO. :)

emily: I just posted links to my Polyvore sets with the Cooper jacket...keep in mind that you can wear many different shirts, blouses, tees underneath it that would be appropriate for your work environment. :)

    ReplyDelete
  30. amy: I have never seen the Porta in person, but from the picture, it looks as if the Cooper is less boxy...it is actually a Peplum style, and is extremely flattering to the body.

    ReplyDelete
  31. ffm: Do you know if the Dream turtleneck sweater (that you have in some of your Chino Cooper Jacket sets) is itchy?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Lindsey B - http://www.jcrew.com/AST/Browse/WomenBrowse/Women_Shop_By_Category/blazers/jackets/PRDOVR~95682/99101496572/95682.jsp is the Tuesday Trench I am talking about - the khaki one first released. I don't want to lead you down the wrong path since I know nothing about the other one!

FFM: I am in NJ, so it can be pretty cold here, especially in the mornings when I leave for work. I want a jacket that I will keep me warm on my way to work, but not one that's part of my "outfit" that I would wear around all day. Your outfits are beautiful btw!

I wish this wasn't online only! Can you get free shipping from a Red Phone when an item is on promo?

    I appreciate everyone's insights very much =)

(I also hope I didn't double post, I think I forgot the "word verification" the first time and then hit reload and it wasn't there, so I'm guessing it didn't go through)

    ReplyDelete
  33. Thanks, fabulousfloridamommy!

Do you think the khaki Cooper offers more versatility and neutrality? or could i substitute the rhubarb for some of the compilations? My work environment is very formal and is competing with my personality.... :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. tammylee: I haven't tried the Dream Turtleneck but do have two Dream Cardigans...I would say they aren't overly itchy, but are not nearly as soft as the Jackie. There is another turtleneck that I think I will opt for over the Dream, if it comes in the particular color I am looking for...it is the Tissue Turtleneck seen Here . They weren't available when I made a lot of my sets, but I have been using them more recently in place of the Dream Turtlenecks. The weight of the Tissue Turtleneck seems to be perfect for layering in warmer weather climates, and work environments that are indoors. :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. ffm: I saw the tissue turtleneck in the catalog and have been wondering about it. I think I might try it as I like the tissue tees.

    ReplyDelete
  36. cleo26: I do think the British Khaki will be more versatile overall, but the Rhubarb CAN be substituted in some of the sets if that is the one you are eyeing. I'm not sure how bright the Rhubarb is, but just as anything else...it can be toned down by making the rest of your outfit basic neutral colors. If your work environment is very formal and professional, you may want to opt for the Khaki and go back for the Rhubarb if you really love it...I am contemplating getting the Rhubarb, as well. :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. OT: Does anyone have Solid Kelly jacket? How does it fit? It seems very short on the model but she might be tall. How would it fit on someone who is petit? Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  38. tammylee: Btw...check out Endless.com...they had a couple pair of Slouchy Boots that look very similar to the Stella McCartney boots in my Polyvore sets. They are flat boots, though, and the Stella boots are heels...not sure if you have a preference.

    ReplyDelete
  39. tammylee: not to butt in on your convo with FFM. But yes the tissue turtlenecks do feel and look (read: see through) like the tissue tees-- or at least last year they did. Personally I am hoping they bring back the featherweight merino turtlenecks, those were great!

    ReplyDelete
  40. anon@10:57: I have the Solid Kelly Jacket in Navy and Bright Flame in a Size Medium. I would have preferred a Small, but the Medium still works out well...I don't think there is a big difference between the sizes, anyways. The jacket comes to the top of my hip bone, and I am 5'4". Hope this helps! :)

    ReplyDelete
  41. Just my take: I don't like the puffed sleeves on this jacket...they are not overly puffy but they go in and out of style where a straight, more tailored sleeve is always in style...I am also wary of the rounded collar...

    ReplyDelete
  42. tammylee and blumre: I think the tissue turtlenecks are defintely best worn as a layering piece under a Blazer or Sweater Jacket...that's how I intend to wear them. I think they are really great for Florida weather since they aren't overly thick and warm...I can still get the look of the turtleneck (which I love) without sweating to death. :)

    ReplyDelete
  43. FFM: Yea... they aren't so great in the Northeast winter/fall climates though. I bought one last winter and never wore it because it was never warm enough. Plus by the time it is warm enough, I don't want to see a turtleneck for another 6 months!! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  44. FFM, thanks for your feedback on the Kelly!

    ReplyDelete
  45. anon@10:57: You are very welcome! Also...I am slightly short-waisted, so that could also make a little bit of a difference on where it hits on the body...I could wear a petite in tops, but normally just choose to wear the regular sizes.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I really liked this jacket and would consider it, but I already have a chino jacket. However, the one I have is unlined and is definitely more blazer-like in its cut than this one so maybe I will check it out!

Also, randomly, the Kingston suede mocs I ordered in June, right before the upgrade, was waitlisted until mid-July but I never received them. A week or so ago, I emailed them asking about it and they said it couldn't be found anywhere. Oh well, c'est la vie, etc. And today I get an email, saying they're shipped and arriving tomorrow! Too crazy.

  47. ANYONE NOTICE ALL THE NEW SALE ITEMS-?MANY OF WHICH ARE ITEMS SO
    LONG GONE BUT ARE BACK!

I got on the phone and placed and order--the girl told me about each and everyone to see that it was in stock. In many case the older items were only one left in which case I KNOW they will be cancelled.

Good luck--the website is far from working order:(

    ReplyDelete
  48. I just ordered it! I think it will be the perfect weight for our "winter" days here in NC. I got the khaki as well. I was a little hesitant b/c I got the cord jacket in basically the same color. But I'm thinking it will match my wardrobe the best. Thanks Alexis for the review! I hadn't noticed this jacket before.

    ReplyDelete
  49. OT...Fit question: the tartine and the cambridge cable cardigans? True to size or did you size up or down?

    ReplyDelete
  50. sooner_girl: i found the tartine fit true to size.

Anyone purchase the Vintage Cord Peplum jacket? What do you think about it? I bought it in the "red" color. I like the cute lining and slight stretchiness but am still on the fence since i like the Cooper too. In some ways, though, the Cooper strikes me as having a bit too much going on with the banded waist, the pleats, and the pockets. Having said that, it seems i might get more versatility from the Cooper, especially if i opt for the khaki color.

I try to temper my impulses because i might like something one day, and two months from now wonder what i was thinking when i made the purchase. Also, I need to be frugal with the number of jackets (and clothes!) i am acquiring. :)

    ReplyDelete
  51. sooner_girl: I sized down for both the Tartine and Cambridge. But if you plan to wear the Tartine as a shirt, you might want to consider getting your regular size.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Alexis: Thanks for the review. I just ordered the jacket in both colors. It looks so pretty, and anyway it's not final sale and I can always return it if it doesn't turn out nice on me. Phew. I'm sick of final sale - can't return and shortshipped all the time.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Cleo26: IMHO, the cord jacket looks more casual and boxier than the Cooper. And the wrinkles show up more in the lighter colors like the khaki. It's still a very pretty jacket, and would go well with jeans.

    ReplyDelete
  54. cleo26: I bought the Vintage cord peplum jacket. I really like it. I bought it in the red. I think it will be good with dark jeans. But now I'm really wanting the cooper jacket too! But I can't do anymore shopping until I get my birthday money this month. I hope I can find the cooper jacket by then.
(my bday is 9?20...so not too much longer. hee, hee)

    ReplyDelete
  55. Alexis: You enabler!!! :) I love the jacket, and being such a dumb sheep I know I can't go wrong with this jacket if you and FFM love it.

    ReplyDelete
  56. la belle helene - I purchased the Baird McNut linen jacket in Navy and Flax. They are $39.99 on sale. I haven't worn them yet, but I don't see the wrinkle factor being as much an issue as with the skirt. Although I asked here on the boards and someone said it wrinkled, but wasn't too bad.

soonergirl - I found the cable sweater to be tts. I am S and purchased a S.

Cleo26 - I tried on the cord peplum jacket. I thought it was sooo cute on. Much cuter on the body than in person. If I didn't already own a closet full of jackets I would have bought it. I love coats & jackets. The color you purchased is unique. I say keep it.

    ReplyDelete
  57. The power of suggestion is amazing! I hadn't even noticed this jacket initially until I saw it in one of FFM's polyvore sets. Alexis, now reading your and ffm's glowing reviews, I am seeing it as a necessity! ;)

I too already have the colette but I think the two jackets are very different. The colette is more casual, unlined and more boxy. The cooper seems like it can dress up or down an outfit. Living in warm Tx climate, this would also be the perfect weight for a "go-to" jacket. That price is really good too...Hmmm...

    ReplyDelete
  58. Thanks, everyone, for the advice. Looks as if a Cooper might be in future...:)

One last thing on the cord jacket:
gigiofca and sooner_girl, did you find the jacket fit true to size? I ended up buying it in a 4 because of comfortable shoulder/back fit even though the bodice area is now a bit to wide. If i choose to leave the jacket open, the 2 would have been a better fit.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Speaking of web issues: One thing I have also noticed is that your order history isn't always complete, based on which browser you check it in. I have a Mac for home and sometimes check it on either Firefox or Safari. I also have an IBM laptop and check it on Firefox there. It's like the feature registers which computer you ordered it off of and doesn't combine all the orders under the same account. :(

    ReplyDelete
  60. Re: turtlenecks--the sale section has cashmere t-necks from last season on sale for 69.99. If you also get the 40% discount, which I was able to get when I called, that's $42! They seem to have a good selection of sizes/colors left. Why bother with the dream knit when you can get cashmere at that price?!

    ReplyDelete
  61. gigiofca: That's great to hear - and what a great price. If I were to try one on at a store, I'd probably get it at that price. ... In fact, I'm quite certain my wardrobe would be even larger if my stores had greater selections. I'd love to try some of the "weddings and parties" dresses, but don't feel like going to the trouble of ordering several of them in several sizes just to find out how they fit....

    ReplyDelete
  62. cass - seriously, if you call, they give you 40% off sale items? I didn't know that.

    ReplyDelete
  63. gigiofca: I have the Baird McNutt Linen jacket in Flax (wear it just like it is shown in the catalog...Cropped Matchstick jeans in Aloe, Amelia tank in ivory, Sergenti belt/sandals) and actually haven't had much of a problem with wrinkling. I got it in Petite and it is VERY cropped on me. If it wasn't FS I would have returned it for a Regular size 0. All the same, it is a lovely jacket and looks great with this particular outfit. :)

    ReplyDelete
  64. cleo26: I thought it was true to size. I normally take a 2 in sweaters/light jackets and I got a 2 in the cord jacket.

    ReplyDelete
  65. ffm: Thanks for the info. on the boots. I do tend to prefer a heel. If you have a minute, take a look at this boot

    http://www.piperlime.com/browse/product.do?cid=19794&pid=611622&scid=611622012

I like it in the concrete color but am wondering if it's too casual to wear with skirts.

    Thannks!

    ReplyDelete
  66. Meg - Thanks! I knew which jacket you were referring to, I just wasn't specific! The 'new' wool Tuesday Trench I sure is very warm, but once again, kind of silly for spring/ fall! :)

    ReplyDelete
  67. Tammylee:I think that could go really nicely with a pencil skirt. Maybe not a business board meeting but certainly in a B-casual environment it could really work.

    ReplyDelete
  68. blumre: Thanks. I always feel better if I know someone else thinks it would work!

    ReplyDelete
  69. tammylee, I think those boots would look fab with skirts! No, I wouldn't wear them in a very professional environment, but otherwise they're spot-on.

    ReplyDelete
  70. la belle helene: Great - thanks for sharing your opinion!

    ReplyDelete
  71. cass,
are you still around? I'd seriously love to know about getting 40% off on-line sale items.

    ReplyDelete
  72. tammylee: I also prefer heels...I actually wear them 99% of the time. :) I like the boots at Piperlime, and I think they would be great to wear with skirts...I know I would! ;)

  73. anyone have an idea what to wear these boots with:

    http://www.6pm.com/n/p/p/7374394/c/89.html

(the gray suede). i bought them in april and so far only wear them with skinny jeans and black or white tops. boring!

  74. How does the back of this jacket look after you have sat down/leaned against a chair/sofa for a while???I don't think the pleating would look so great...

Someone else mentioned washing/ironing the pleats too...I think I will pass.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I noticed this jacket when it first came out but passed because of the styling of the shoulders, rounded collar & pleats in the back of the jacket. I have been sucked into the 'fantasy' of other jackets only to be let down when I had it in person. The Cooper reminds me a tad too much of the Peplum look. Lately JCrew is getting so close but just not the right look for me.

You would think they could've pulled the purple fuzz off the model's left shoulder before they took the picture...with the 'zoom' option and all.

    ReplyDelete
  76. LBH,

Yes, I have gotten 40% off the sale items when I call. I have gotten quite a few cashmere bargains this way. I open by asking if they will match the additional 40% off that is happening in the stores. They have agreed on my past 3 orders--one CSR just asked for the store in which I shopped, another had to call the store, and the third simply said yes without asking for more info. I didn't push my luck by also asking for FS or student discount on top--they seem to have gotten strict about not combining the discounts.

    ReplyDelete
  77. melissa--wow those boots are a bargain now!!! I might get a pair ;)

    ReplyDelete
  78. cass,
thanks - I don't think it would work for me, then, because the stuff I'm looking at isn't in stores anymore. Too bad :-(

    ReplyDelete
  79. LBH: Sorry to barge in but it doesn't have to be in the store. In fact, I've done this with items that were cat/web only items. They just confirm that the 40% off is going on at your b&m.

    ReplyDelete
  80. weab, please barge in - that's great news :-)

do you have to call from a store, then?

    ReplyDelete
  81. lbh: It depends which way the wind is blowing. ;) If they ask, I just tell them I was in there earlier, which is true.

  82. LBH, as weab says, the items do not need to be available in the store. The extra discount on final sale items just has to be going on in a store. I have done this both over the red phone and when I call on my own.

    ReplyDelete
  83. jcrewjunkie - I am a P but got it in a regular 4. Guess I'm glad I did. I can't imagine it being shorter. Great outfit. I didn't think to try it with any skinny jeans I own. Must wear jacket this week! And the power of suggestion on the Sergenti belt is happening in my life. Everyone seems to have this so I need to check it out. ;-)

weab - In total agreement w/your 40% experience. I think the luck depends on the CS you get. If you get one that works from home, they can't nesc dial out to check a store. So they have to be willing to take your word and apply the discount. Best to know the store closest to you (no matter how many miles) has the 40% off.

  84. anyone been by a B and M today to see if any good stuff got marked down? Can't tell from the web

  85. grrr! I am so sick of clicking on a sale link only to open up a page that only has full-priced items. Seriously, has any company ever launched a website with less professionalism than j.crew?

  86. This is a jacket that I hope to buy - one day. I love jackets and want this one in khaki. I need a khaki jacket and this one is perfect! I just spent too much money this weekend, plus I'm buying the paintbrush floral skirt. I tried it on Monday and loved it but didn't want to pay that much. So, I bought a jackie cardigan, cord skirt, and a dress for my niece. After getting home and remembering that it was no longer online, I called yesterday and asked them to hold it. Surprisingly, they were willing to hold it until Saturday, even without my paying for it over the phone! Now, as long as Hanna misses me, I'll be down there Saturday morning. :)

    ReplyDelete
  87. The jacket is nice however I don't like the round collar, I have a round face so I don't think it wouls suit me.

math-teacher: Did you get your slub cotton tunic yet?

    Hope Hanna misses you too.

    ReplyDelete
  88. math teacher,
Best of luck with making that trip :-)
Does the paintbrush floral fit sort of like the belles?

    ReplyDelete
  89. math teacher: I sure do hope Hanna doesn't continue to come your way! It looks as if she will stay off of our coast, but is now headed straight for you...that's horrible! I wish the storm would just continue on a path back out into the Atlantic and miss both of us! Have you seen the Weather Underground site? It's great for getting Storm information outside of your local news studio. Click Here

    ReplyDelete
  90. casual-crew: Of course I haven't received my tunic yet! :) After they lost the order, I ordered another one. (Of course, they must refund the 1st and I must rebuy the 2nd, at the same price.) The cs told me Monday evening that they would overnight it, but I haven't received it yet and their website still shows it as released. If I don't get it this time, I'm going to assume that I'm not suppose to have it and forget it.

LBH: What's strange is that I didn't like the belle in the solid colors. Strange, isn't it? This one didn't seem as poufy on me.

FFM: Right now, they say it's suppose to hit north of us. Which is good, since it puts us on the west side of the storm. There's still a chance that it could hit us; we'll know more tomorrow afternoon. It depends on how sharp of a turn it makes. And, we have Ike and Josephine right behind and they look like they're following the same path. :(

    ReplyDelete
  91. FFM: That's a great site, thanks for sending it. I've added it to my favorites and I'll send the address on to school.

  92. OT-do the hammered silk tanks run true or big like the Lydia and Elizabeth?? Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  93. OT-Kinda sucks checking back on my orders and watching my items slowly continue to go from "open" to CANCELLED! Wonder if I will have anything left before the days stop passing by...
I wish they would get things JIVING between order and warehouse!!!! :(

    ReplyDelete
  94. Anon at 6:32:

I normally wear a size M. I got a size 4 in the hammered silk tank. The 2 fit well, too - but was just a little tight around the arm holes. I couldn't tell a difference between the 2 and 4 besides that. I ordered an XS in the Lydia because the arm holes were huge! Just for reference, I have broad sholders and no chest!

    ReplyDelete
  95. Ok, I have to review the things that arrived today.

    1. Water color Lydia: I wanted to love this like everyone else, but I'm not sure. It seems like the ruffles get lost in the print of the shirt. Even the XS is rather boxy on me. I paired it with the Regal purple Jackie. I just don't think its worth the $$.

    2. Dream tie cardigan: I had to size down. I got the heather silver and eggplant. Any opinions on which one is more versatile?

    3. Lydia in offwhite: Does this remind anyone else of the puffy shirt episode of Seinfeld - where he wore that puffy shirt on some talk show? I'm returning this. I just don't think the Lydia is working for me...

    Questions:
    1. Do most people size up for the Jackie? I wear mine with tanks and tees, and find that it pulls some when I button it up. Do you all wear your Jackies buttoned (how many buttons) or undone?

    2. The Serengeti tank isn't on Polyvore - so I need outfit ideas. What are you all wearing with this? I thought maybe the brown Jackie or the silver mist/offwhie Dream tie cardigan.

    Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  96. It's so good to hear so many good reviews for this jacket...Maybe I should give it a try! However, from the pictures, I feel that this jacket would probably be more flattering for someone who has a longer torso? Also, is it boxy when you don't button it up? Just wondering. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  97. Re Cooper, I am abstaining because it looks like it will hit like the Mendocino--the waist will be too high on me. I have short little legs so ordinarily I like the look of a higher waist, but IMHO the Cooper would emphasize the length of my torso from waist to fanny--see rear view on model.

To review the items I received today:
Super 120s suiting dress in royal violet: I am keeping this because I love the color so much, but I expect to be paying a lot for alternations. I know every woman's figure is different, but IMHO J.Crew's designers really botched the fit on this one. I tried a 6 R and a 6 P and it looks like the 4 R is the closest fit. The back and sides are really large-I realize some of this is part of the design, but I think someone would have to have very broad shoulders and a lot of length between the shoulders and the waist to get the dress to hang the way it does on the model. As a previous poster noted, alternations will be complicated due to the waistband detailing. Only a color this gorgeous would make me go through all this.

Scoop neck perfect fit T: Nearly 4 weeks after I ordered this, they overnighted it to me (they lost the order *three* times). This is a nice fit--if I were still a single girl I would say it's a good first date top because it's feminine and shows a lot of skin without actually showing a lot of boob or cleavage (or bra strap). Persimmon is a nice orange with just a touch of red (as compared to my Marmalade capris or Sweet Orange Candace). It will look cute with jeans and my Flame/Black Clea flats.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Gah, that's *alterations*. I always do that.

    ReplyDelete
  99. hexicon: I agree with you on the cooper! (Side note: I've noticed several times now that we share a lot of the same opinions on Jcrew items! :)

    ReplyDelete
  100. Complete OT, but still... I just placed an order over the phone and forgot to ask for free shipping (sorta typical for me). So I called back and gave them the code, CSR said: I will apply it right away. I am checking my order and I dont see shipping refunded. Is that a problem? Do I need to call back? In the past when I forgot to mention free shipping code (due to excitement for getting a good deal), next CSR i talked to explain that she can't just change order that already was placed but she can put a note that shipping charge will be refunded when items ship. That charge is yet to show up on my jcrew card account so I dont know if that actually works. Did anyone have same experience?

    ReplyDelete
  101. Re: Super 120s suiting dress in royal violet. I tried this one on in the store and it just looked so awful. It just didnt fit right anywhere. I have sort of short torso and avoid dresses that are not sleeveless. With straps I can just shorten the straps and that would be it. With this address I figured alterations would cost me more than the dress. Not worth it.

  102. Argyle: I made a polyvore set with the Serengeti paired with a purple jackie. My PS suggested it. It looks very good! You could pretty much put any color of cardigan over it, however.

For Anyone Trying to Call CS to get 40% off Final Sale: If they tell you "no" or that you have to be calling from the store, just be persistent. I have gotten the discount before calling from home, and I tell them that if they ever give me any trouble.

Alexis: Thanks so much for the review of the Chino Cooper jacket! I thought it was so cute and the perfect lightweight jacket from the moment I saw it hit the website, but I hadn't heard anything mentioned about it until now! I guess I will have to try it after all. I also ordered the Tuesday Trench in Khaki, and it will be arriving in a few days. We'll have to compare notes...

    ReplyDelete
  103. Ashley: how do i find you polyvore set?

    ReplyDelete
  104. Beautiful jacket. I just ordered it, discount code FALL works on it (even though its discounted) so I ordered it shipped for $80 shipped. Thanks! Becky in Iowa.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Here's my review of fall items I just received:

Ruffled mandarin jacket--unlined, felted-type wool felt kind of itchy. Fit is kind of boxy, and it is kind of cropped but too long to look purposely cropped and too short to look like a normal length. This is going back.

Glass bead ribbon necklace: the beads were actually not overbearing or too heavy. I think this necklace is cute if you are looking for a whimsical/playful look, but I was hoping for something more sophisticated. Also, one odd thing is that the string knotted between the black beads is a light turquoise color, which I don't really like. This is also going back b/c it doesn't really fit my professional wardrobe, but I might consider repurchasing just for fun if it goes on super sale.

Favorite fit university pants in the camel: I generally liked the style of the pants (cute button tabs on waist and liked the wide leg), but I think the camel color just washes me out b/c it matches my hair color too much. If I didn't already have several pairs of charcoal pants, I would get that color. But I can't justify $140 on pants I don't love, so they are going back.

So it was a total wash on all the new stuff, though I did get some sale items I was happy with (ruffle polo, egyptian cotton s/s cardigans, avery cardigan, 2 cashmere sweaters), which is fortunate since they are final sale. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  106. Alexis: I'm glad to hear that you love your jacket. While it's NMS, I think it looks lovely on others. And to say "value" and "J Crew Jacket" in the same sentence...well, that has to put a smile on your face!

OT: I received the spicy mustard Lucille in an 8 thanks to a very nice and helpful manager at JCrew in Lake O, OR. She used the product locator and found me one (it was sold out previously on the site, but is now back) at Stanford. She arranged to have it FedExd to me (no charge) and allowed me to keep my 15% FALL discount from the catalog! :) I was beyond pleased !

I want to give a "shout-out" to musthavecrew, for being such a sweetie and offering me her size 8 Lucille. She kindly held off returning it until I knew the dealio from JCrew and I thought that was really sweet, seeing as it's a $280+ coat!

Weab: I also found out that the Anthropologie New Semester Jacket that I had ordered runs very large! (now viewable only on Polyvore) I had ordered both a Medium and Large but the small fits me! Their sizing is very wacky (Guinevere is the manufacturer). In any case, the small is perfect - more of a sweater/light jacket vs. the jacket-feel of the Lucille. The jacket is unlined, so it doesn't retain it's structure like a true jacket. But it's a beautiful layering piece, more like a sweater. The color is a rich red and the lambswool is super-cozy!

    ReplyDelete
  107. Hey Audrey! I'm glad you got your coat and it worked out!!!

    ReplyDelete
  108. Hi there. I know a few of you on here have the Jamie sweater and I'd love to hear your opinions. I'm really considering getting it given the current price ($59), but since it's final sale, I'm a bit nervous. How is the quality and fit? Thanks in advance!

    ReplyDelete
  109. musthavecrew: Well, you rock and I wanted everyone to know.

Did you exchange the Lucille for something else ; ) ? "Inquiring minds want to know..." LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  110. Audrey: Thanks so much for the review! The semester jacket sounds perfect! I just might have to give it a try myself. I really love the color! For some reason it doesn't show up on-line now but it still shows up in my cart. We'll see what happens. :)

btw, congrats on the Lucille! Talk about some amazing CS!!!

    ReplyDelete
  111. argyle: I am an XS in every J Crew sweater except for the Jackie. I usually order a Medium in the cardigan and a Small in the shell. If I don't do this then I get the "pulling" that you speak of. Also, I wear my Sergenti tank with the Regal Purple Jackie cardi...it looks awesome!

anon @ 6:32: I had to order up for the Hammered Silk tank. I ordered, initially, a 2 and had to size up to a 4 because of tightness under the arms. I got it in Peacock to go with my Bright Blue Jackie cardigan. So pretty together...I was relieved that they still had my size when I reordered!

    ReplyDelete
  112. OT: Who has the Martine cardi in the Pink/Orange combination? Someone said that their PS matched it with a navy tank, I believe. Does that sound correct? Just checking before I wear it! :)

    ReplyDelete
  113. Audrey: Apparently the semester jacket is now out of stock...oh well, I guess it wasn't meant to be...

    ReplyDelete
  114. Weab: Let me know if you have trouble finding it. They had plenty at the store I was at (in all the sizes):
    Anthropologie:
    Brewery Blocks
    1115 N.W. Couch St., #600
    Portland, OR 97209
    (503) 274-0293

The color is luscious, but again, it's not a "jacket" jacket...They had fantastic customer service too. The jacket is $20 less than it was in the store and when I pointed that out, they were extremely apologetic and charged me the online price.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Weab: If you want, let me know what size you are needing in the Anthro jacket...they were trying to divert my package (with the M and L) but I haven't heard if they were successful. If not, I know I have those...they also had one other Small and 2 extra smalls in-store, plus a few mediums and larges.

    ReplyDelete
  116. audrey: Thanks so much for the info! My anthro didn't carry it and said that they wouldn't be getting any in either. I'm in Tx so a heavier sweater for our climate is perfect! (I've already completely passed my limit on coats/jackets and it's not even going to be cold here until mid-November) :) So this is a great item that I can actually justify! Thanks again for your help, you're AWESOME! ;)

ps, for those of you interested in the black bauble necklace, I found this necklace at Harold's. I've got one on hold at my Harold's and plan on picking it up tomorrow. The price is great ($58). I just hope it's as pretty IRL as it seems on-line.

    ReplyDelete
  117. audrey: that is so sweet of you! I would probably need an XS if it runs big. I'll give them a call tomorrow! Thanks again! You are so thoughtful!

    ReplyDelete
  118. Ann 9:36, yes, my ps suggested the pink martine with a navy tank and the martin pants in stone. I haven't worn this yet (too hot) but I cannot wait until I do. Let me know how else you wear it!

    ReplyDelete
  119. FFM: Congrats on the jacket!!! That is too funny that you got it too. I think our closets could be mirrors of each other (since we buy so many of the same things!) :)

JCrewJunkie & Emily & SS & Pink1 & Anon at 12:44 PM: Congrats on getting the jacket as well!!! :)

Anon at 12:51 PM & Weab & Cleo26: I really think you will love the jacket (if you decide to get it)!!! :)

Blumre: Thanks for the congrats! ;) I am also happy to find out the jacket is fully lined. :)

Meg: I would definitely wear this jacket on a cool spring day with a nice (thin) sweater underneath. :)

Ali.cee: Love the term: Aficionada Effect!!! :)

Ashley: Let me know how you like the Tuesday Trench. :) Also congrats on the Tuesday Trench purchase. :)

Cass: Congrats on the purchases!!! :)

Audrey: I agree with you that anytime "value" and "JCrew" are in the same sentence- it is a wonderful thing!

    ReplyDelete
  120. Oh no, JcrewJunkie - I'm already 3 Medium Jackies in. I think I should have gotten Larges. Surely if I am a size 4 and wear a Medium in most things I shouldn't size up to an XL, right?! I'll have to try an L.

    ReplyDelete
  121. I love the reviews on here. However, I won't be purchasing this piece. I bought the Liana jacket not too long ago and get so many compliments. I have big shoulders versus waist so these sleeves rarely work for me.

I tried the cord peplum jacket on last week. It wasn't flattering on my shape.

Here is Memphis, it is either hot (high 90s) or in the 30s-40s. I can wear these jackets to work but I typically dump the jacket once I get there. The Liana and the canvas Fionas seem to be the two jackets I keep on during the day.

*If* I didn't have some other jackets that would also work well, I might order this to try it out. While I don't do well with the shoulder/sleeves like this one, I love the pleats.

    ReplyDelete
  122. tired memphian - Hi :-)

Cleo26 - I wear a 4 and found the cord peplum to be tts. It sounds like you got the correct size. Remember that you will want the option to button it and you will also want room for a layer or two underneath.

argyle - I usually wear my jackies opened all the way or buttoned except for the top 2. I have some S and usually take a S but I just recvd a M and I love that, too. I think you did good to get mediums if you don't want them to pull across the bust. I think L or XL is too large because then it won't fit in the shoulders.

    ReplyDelete
  123. Weab and Audrey: Speaking of Anthro...I got their catalog yesterday and have a new must have item. The ellipses shooties (page 14). I don't live near a store, have you seen these IRL?

    Here's the link: http://www.anthropologie.com/anthro/catalog/productdetail.jsp?id=840172&navAction=jump&search=true

    ReplyDelete
  124. argyle: Keep the Medium! I like a looser, longer fit of a Medium because I don't like my shell to peek out at the bottom. Also, my Jackie always ends up in the dryer so getting a Medium allows for shirnkage! I also do wear the XS, but don't like the tight fit in the arms. I think that you would swim in an XL, or even an L. What color Jackies did you get? I got the Bright Blue last week (pairing it with the Peacock Hammered Silk tank) and it is luscious!

    ReplyDelete
  125. musthavejcrew: I can't wait to try this with a navy tank...a color combination that I didn't think of, but sounds wonerful together! I also have the stone pants as well. Wooo hooo.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Emily: Wow! Those are happenin' shoes! I haven't seen them, but my store is so "stylized" it's possible it's tucked away in a corner and I have no clue. If I stop by there this week, I'll keep my eye open for them. Are you wanting to know about fit, look, comfort, etc.?

    ReplyDelete
  127. Audrey: I'd love any additional information on them. I showed them to my husband, who hated them! I'm all about the unexpected, but it's so hard to tell from a catalog. Thanks for scoping it out for me!

    ReplyDelete
  128. I love the jacket! However, I have a similar one from Ann Taylor (last season), in the khaki. I would probably buy the rhubarb if it goes further on sale. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  129. Jcrew Junkie: I have the shell pink, navy, and bright azul. I just ordered the regal purple and maple brown color in M. I ordered a L in those same colors just because I'll always wonder... I'll see which ones fit better. Thanks for your input!

    ReplyDelete
  130. I bought the Cord Peplum jacket in navy and LOVE it! I got the 6 and found that it runs pretty true to size.

For the Jackie, I have one from last year in a medium but bought 4 this year (navy, black, cream, kelly green) in small. I don't usually button them all the way, so I find that the smalls fit best in my shoulders.

Emily - those shoes are great! And actually affordable for Anthro. Their shoes are usually SO expensive that I never buy them. My boyfriend will hate these, but I may have to scoop them up anyway!
