Item 99510
Regular: $895.00

"Thanks!" to Anon at 12:57 PM (in this post) who pointed out this latest dress offering from J.Crew. I think it makes for a great "love it or leave it" post. :)

Unfortunately, this dress is a "leave it" for me. One reason: price- I think this dress is a *tad* overpriced. ;)

Another reason: versatility. The website describes the dress as "party perfect—the softest grey silk covered in thousands of bright yellow paillettes". I am not sure how "party perfect" the dress really is. I mean if you wear it once everyone will remember, which limits the number of uses. It definitely is not as versatile as the little black dress, which J.Crew offers so many beautiful versions of (click here).

Lastly, the website describes the style as "Sleeveless silhouette. Blouson bodice, straight skirt. Skinny straps. Scoopneck. Back zip. Interior corset for added support". Unfortunatley, I don't think the style of the dress is that flattering, even on the {absolutely gorgeous} model. However, I could be wrong since I have not seen this dress in person.

Incidentally, I do love that J.Crew mentions in the description that the dress is "shipped in a gift box with blue ribbon". It is a nice touch, but definitely not enough to convince me to purchase this dress. ;)

What are your thoughts on the Confetti Flapper Dress? Do you "love it" or would you "leave it"? Do you already own this dress? If so, please share with us your review. :)

  1. Can you say, "confetti FLAPPY top dress"? Check out the back of that thing. This thing is shapeless and doesn't even look good on a model's frame--more like an overpriced bag.

My, my such strong opinions tonight, bugpin;)

  2. I didn't realize that's a dress! Why don't they just make it a one piece to give it more shape? But even then, I am not sure if I want to walk around with some leftover confetti from New Year's eve. I admire the courage of whoever designed and approved this dress to be on the market though.

  3. I agree with you, Alexis! It definitely is a very striking dress, so you couldn't wear it too often. Kind of sad, with it's $900 price tag. Also, when I think of a flapper, I don't think this is what comes to mind. :)

  4. I agree that the downfall of this dress is its shape (or lack thereof.) It pretty much negates the very idea of a waist, so I know for certain it would make my *curvy* frame look like a box. Surprisingly it even has that effect on the stick-figure model. Guess I'll be leaving it. ;)

  5. I have to say this, from a guy's point of view, this dress makes you look fat. Enough said.

  6. Ha, I just noticed this dress online today and spent a few minutes checking it out! I think it's gorgeous-- I'm finding myself drawn to shapes outside of the same old, same old more and more recently. I've always loved the loose, relaxed flapper style and, although shapes that accentuate the waist and a woman's curves are most flattering on my figure, it's fun to see something different. It feels fresh! Unfortunately, I'd never wear this, even if I could afford it-- yellow looks teeeeeeeeeeerrible on me.

  7. I definitely don't love this one. As Jeff said- the shape does nothing for the model, and it makes her look...fat. Which is a nearly impossible feat. No thanks, J. Crew!

  8. First, the price is ridiculous! Maybe you guys spend way more on clothes than I do but even if I liked the dress(which I don't) the price for a JCrew item is insane! If I was going to pay this for a dress it would not be from JCrew! The quality is just not there anymore...they have raised their prices but the quality has gone WAY down.

  9. she looks like a fancy banana
    it's a pass for me

  10. This will be a *leave it* for me due to price, fit, and color...I'd be interested to see how truly bright this dress is IRL, since J.Crew is actually calling it *Bright Yellow*...I'm thinking it's possibly more of a neon yellow...

  11. Who would this dress look good on? The shape makes it ugly; the yellow 'confetti' would make me feel like a canary.

  12. LEAVE IT! The top looks *just* like a pajama top - and yellow is, well, yellow. I'm with Jeff. This would make anyone look fat

  13. This is a "leave it" for me. While I know that the flapper style looks like it hangs in the front-- I just do not think that it is a flattering style...... There is no shape to this dress. I am not sure about most of you on this blog-- not a pure "confetti" dress is a bit hard to pull off at the normal parties I attend-- plus, once worn-- I would think that it would remembered by most, so unless you have many circles of friends, it would be one that I would wear....

  14. I agree, it doesn't look flattering on the model from the front, but she is slouching into a lean. If she were standing tall or walking, it would look better. She looks plenty skinny from the side. I like the style, but not the color. Turquoise sequins would be nicer, IMO. I could wear it for dinner on the beach.

  15. If it doesn't look good on the model, it won't look good on ANYONE (especially someone who is petite like myself).

    ReplyDelete
  16. It's a definite NO. Can't see how the shape would be flattering on anyone, doesn't even look good on the model.

  17. As I stated in yesterdays post... She looks like a school bus in that dress!

  18. OMG! It looks exactly like my costume from my 4th grade dance recital! All she needs is the sequined headband with the feather in the back. I hated it then and I hate it now. What are they thinking? Even the droopy elastic!
Mary Kate Olsen is the only person who will buy that dress. It'll be 9.99 minus 40% in the outlet by next year.

  19. Haha Jeff, well said!-- From a woman's point of view I would have to agree with you!

  20. This is definitely a "pass" for me!!

  21. I'd be curious to see how this sells - between the ridiculous price and unflattering cut, it's hard to see it even crawling off shelves. Then again, J.Crew probably only made a handful.

    ReplyDelete
  22. When a dress doesn't even look good in a catalog shot on a model, you have to wonder who it WOULD look good on. In this case, my guess is no one.

  23. Jeff pretty much sums it up for me. Thanks Jeff!

  24. leave it. i generally love sequins and i think the colors are unique (they look great on the model) but the fit is definitely weird. i wonder if it was 3-tiered instead of 2-tiered, if it'd look more "flapper" and less like 2 awkward fitting pieces. it might help if the skirt was shorter, too? or longer? or...

  25. i love dresses with paillettes - slightly less sparkle than sequins and not as uncomfortable as scratchy sequins. i have jcrew's white t-shirt paillette dress from last summer (which i got at a good sale price) and love it and i was intrigued when i saw this one, but, holy smokes, that's expensive! it's definitely a dress that, if it looked good, would only look good on a skinny stick-thin girl (which i used to be and am slowly happily leaving that body shape behind!)

  26. I think it's a perfectly pretty dress, I don't think it makes the model look fat or shapeless. I also like the yellow and gray together. I just have no where to wear such a thing, and even if I did, I couldn't allow myself to spend $895 on it.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I think that one could find a better looking and cheaper dress in a vintage shop. In the closup picture it looks like some of the yellow paillettes are missing and you see the underlying grey ones. This looks sloppy. The price is steep! Not a dress I would buy even though I like 1920's style.

  28. *Leave it*
I think I would like it better if the bottom were not a pencil skirt with the floopy top. If it were a simple straight true flapper shape it would look much better and the pailettes and color would be something the right person could pull off.

  29. I would like this dress if it weren't yellow and nearly $900. J.Crew, what are you thinking?

They need to make more pieces that are actually wearable. Whatever happened to the leopard sequin dress that was $3000? Did it go on sale or did J.Crew get rid of it?

  30. Eva, they hid those with the Lucido coats..in Mickey's backyard :0

  31. I am in the minority in liking this dress -- it looks like the shape allows for movement which flatters by giving the suggestion of a slim waist while you are in motion while accentuating a slim hip (if you are so lucky). I can see it being tough to pull off for anything other than a boyish figure, however. Price point is too high, however -- I don't care if the sequins were sewn on by hand . . . they're going to fall off quickly, regardless (assuming, of course, that you have the requisite multiple groups of friends to show the dress off to or will be the same size five years from now thus giving you occasion to wear the dress more than once).

  32. LEAVE IT, would not even want it if I got it for free.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I think this dress would be an excellent choice for Halloween if you were going as yellow tube coral (see here).

    ReplyDelete
  34. This dress is terrible! Very poor styling. Why would you consider paying $900 for something that makes even the model look 20 lbs overweight!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I agree with the other Anon that this dress will look great in motion, especially when pairing with a long sheer scarf.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Looks to me like you could wear it no matter whether your size changes or not! It's rather shapeless and does resemble pajamas:)With an uneven hemline to boot!

Kitchy-Hilarious!That's perfect as this may be about the price of a costume by Halloween!
You go girl with those hyperlinks--I am jealous!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I also would not want it if it was free. I am one of those boyish figures... but why would I want to emphasize it even more by looking even more shapeless? Ugh. Yellow and gray together are also awful. I wonder what JCrew is thinking with this one?

  38. That model is one of their most broad, robustly built models. They put the Harper sweater on her too. Both were a mistake for the same reason: The two items look best on small frames....girls with delicate shoulders and thin limbs....a gamine type. They should have used Vanessa, or at least a brunette with her body type if they were concerned with putting a blond in yellow.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Thanks bug pin! And I'd also like to thank the academy, and my mom, and of course,
this website, without which I would never have been able to master hyperlinks. :)

    ReplyDelete
  40. Oooh--thanks for the cool link Kitchy7!

    ReplyDelete
  41. LEAVE IT! When a model can't make it look good, it is a pretty sure bet that it's not going to work on us mere mortals.

    ReplyDelete
  42. This would be a leave it for me. I don't like the unstructuredness of it. I think with the horizontal bias look makes the wearer look wider...well, fat. Then, the cami style top is simply unflattering. I'm not sure how to explain it, but the shape seems to "weigh down" the top down, making it look flimsy and shapeless.

J.Crew has so many other beautiful dresses that i don't have to worry that i will be leaving this one. :)

  43. OT alert.

I did not have any idea what a flapper dress is supposed to look like so I googled "flapper dress" and found that Kate Moss actually designed some really cute ones and a whole lot more affordable!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Something like this appeals to me only for a costume or themed party-- but I would buy a vintage flapper dress at a consingment/thrift store, or a cheaper knock off. I would never pay $800 or whatever for it.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I am definitely not loving this dress. It reminds me of the sequin glitterati dress from holiday '08 but I think that navy color was way prettier and the fit of that dress was more flattering. I'm not sure why J.Crew went this route, especially with this impractical color, and ridiculous price.

    ReplyDelete
  46. With my job, I am always needing cocktail dresses. I agree though, this dress has so much going on, NO one will forget it after you wear it just once!

I like the idea. Too bad they didn't take into account different body types. I could see this dress showing up in someone's closet on "What Not To Wear" in about 10 years...

Oh, J.Crew, how I do love you though. ;-)
