J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Some goodies from the new April catalog discussed here . Also some rather curious finds. But you knew that.

  2. I got my order with the 30% off last week and here are what I got:
    - the Odeon Oxford heels in size 6: they are a bit narrow( I do not have large feet though)and I know I could have go them in 6H but I did bot want to take the risk since my regular J crew shoe size is 6. I think they will stretch with the wear. I love them so much because they are really well crafted. By the way, I love this blog because some JCAS notices nice items I overlooked, like these heels. Without them, I would have missed them! So thank you!
    - two vintage matchstick cords in dark charcoal and warm taupe, both in size 24S. I actually ordered this size because the 25 was all gone and luckily they both fit, which surprised me because I gave birth 4 month ago and still have an extra 9 pounds. So my question is: Did J Crew sized up their clothes? I wonder...

  3. Canvas schoolboy blazer - Super cute. TTS for J Crew jackets/blazers. Lightweight and not much shoulder pad, which I love. Came home with me using my Mickey card.

  4. Irl pics of the sequin-stripe tee ($29.99) in this post.

Tried the siren dress (35702) in smoldering brick. Shop With M liked it quite a bit. It wasn't a match for me. The top flopped around and sagged at the underarm and towards the back. The material from the waist was voluminous, but not too much. The top was what was messed up. Also, the color wasn't as pretty as I expected. I think it just didn't work w/my skin tone. Not enough contrast. Very disappointed as I had high hopes.

  5. Ever engage in the battle of really wanting something vs. realizing it's not the greatest fit? So goes my lead-in to the Rialta tweed jacket review: It's a boxy cut, not remotely shaped as the mannequin picture asserts. Ergo by the time I sized up to fit my D cups, my waist is lost somewhere inside a tent. Quel dommage. It's pretty, I'd wear it with so many outfits (though never as a modern suit with capris or shorts as j.crew believes fitting). Not sure a tailor could make a difference, but may inquire, because did I mention what a pretty little number this is?

Hmm - word verification: Unsigh. Didn't know one could.

  6. I love love love my matinee trench. It's the perfect spring/fall layer. It's definitely multifunctional - I can wear it in the rain, too. And can we talk about the hood? It's about time that a trench had a hood!

Those Camden brogues... I like them. They need to be worn in a bit more, but for the two times I've worn them, I haven't had any blisters. I got them in nutmeg and they go with so many things.

I have the castaway dress in smoky graphite. A good little shift made in a pretty cool material. It's got just enough texture. I'm wearing it with a long sleeved tee, a scarf, belt and boots. I can't wait to shed the early spring layers and add some sandals to it.

One of my white card purchases was the cadabra cardigan in vintage fatigue. I untied it and left it like an open cardigan. When I'm walking quickly it kind of feels like I'm wearing a cape, which is really cool. The cotton is supremely soft and it's a great light layer for this time of the year. And um, the vintage fatigue color? It's my new favorite neutral.

The camp pocket cardigan in smoldering brick - fantastic with JC's bettina cami in white ash + denim skinnies. It's got a nice light weight and of course it's super soft. Not sure how much wear I will get out of this one, but my skin doesn't play well with wool and other animal fibers, so I'm grabbing every cotton cardigan in sight.

  7. denise:

about the castaway dress... thinking about buying it in white... did you see the white in person? sheer? also, i'm 5'4" so curious as to wear the small/size 4 would land on me... think it might be too short for casual work environment in summer?

  8. I really, really wanted to love the Linea shift dress. And, I could have- with one minor alteration. I realize that this is a shift dress, but the lack of a defined waist made me look like I was wearing a paper sack (a pretty orange paper sack!) Being a curvy, pear shaped girl, I need a little nipping at the waist for definition. Adding a belt made the dress too short for me and scrunched the fabric up funny. For reference, I'm 5'5", and the dress hit me about 2" above the knee- a good length, not too short at all w/o a belt. I felt that I could have taken it for a bit of alterations, but not at full price. So, back it went.

  9. Hi Joy:

I bought the castaway dress online, so I didn't see the white one in action in-store. Given the generous cut of the top and thick sleeveless "sleeve" you could do a slip with it without a problem (if you're not averse to wearing one). I'm petite (5'0") so I can get away with it in the office, but I'm thinking it would reeeeeally be pushing it on anyone much taller. Good luck!

  10. I bought the oxford scout chinos in the orchid blue, and love them! I see they are on mark down now! (picture posted on my blog HERE.) I took my usual size in J Crew pants.....

  11. I second the love for the Matinee Trench. I've always wanted a trench, but always talked myself out of them since they didn't have hoods, and I think a rain jacket needs a hood. I love this piece. It fits great, maybe a bit big, and looks so classic yet updated when belted. I loved it so much I bought it at full price, which I never do.

I'm also in love with the orange/red paisley pencil skirt that is in stores only. Beautiful print, very nice and thick fabric, excellent fit. TTS.

Chambray Schoolboy Blazer- very nice. If I can snag this once it goes on sale, I definitely will. Fits TTS and looks very polished, yet somewhat casual.

Dixon Short Boots- Pass. They make my huge feet look even more huge.

  12. Denise and Brandon + Allie,

How's the fit on the matinee trench? Should I go with my usual outerwear size?

    Denise,

I'm 5' as well. Did you order regular or petite? About where does the trench hit you?

    TIA!

  13. WFF, the link to your blog doesn't work. I'm sure most are savvy enough to go to your profile to get to your blog but wanted to let you know anyway.

  14. Jackie- Matinee trench fits TTS, maybe even a little big. I got my usual outerwear/blazer size.

Oralie Cardigan- I tried this in store last week and LOVE it. DF didn't like it and said it was too shiny. It definitely has a metallic look and it moves like you are wearing a chain metal sweater, but it is a great weight and it is the perfect cut. I have been looking for a sweater in this cut/weight forever. It is highway robbery at the retail price ($150), but if I can get it for less than 80 I will!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Hi Jackie:

I think it fits TTS. I got the trench in 00P and it hits me mid-thigh. It looks like some of the JCA's are finding it to be a teensy bit big, but I did not, but maybe it's because I'm a layer-er, so that might make it a more snug fit. Good luck!

  16. Has anyone seen/tried the Windowpane Trenchlet yet? Curious on the fit especially the length and fabric quality.

  19. OT but I just got an email offering 20 per cent off entire purchase at J Crew Fair Oaks mall in VA, to celebrate one year being open. Looks like a unique code but maybe the SAs will be nice and offer if you ask? Worth a try.

  20. Thanks ladies for the feedback on the matinee trench!

    dinster,

I got the same email but mine says 20% off any in-store purchase of $150+... which is useless since it's the same as the Mickey card.

  21. Jackie,

I agree, I think it's TTS or a little on the big side. I usually get a 10 but sometimes a 10 is tight in the arms and shoulders, especially when I wear sleeves underneath. The matinee give me plenty of room in those areas.

And in case any tall girls are wondering, I'm almost 5'11 and it hits about 3 inches below my bum. ;)

  22. thanks, IRL! I was trying to change my picture for something even more attractive, and in the course of that seem to have lost the ability to create a link. On it.

  23. Has anyone else had issues with their Cadabra cardigan pilling?

I wore my vintage fatigue twice last week and noticed that it was already heavily pilled under the arms and down by the wrists.

I love the sweater, and had bought it in navy as well (REALLY LOVED the sweater) but am wondering if I shouldn't bring the navy back while I still can due to pilling.

    Anyone else having this problem?

  24. Ordered a few things with the sale last week (free shipping to Canada! yay!)

Classic Leather belt: Nice quality leather, TTS, more of a brown color than the "red clay" as it's described
Petite Flower Mosaic embroidered tunic in saltwater grey: A little boxy in the fit, I think it'll look cute in the summer with some denim shorts and sandals though. Not in love with the item, but for $20 it's something I'll wear. The strings that hang down the front might get a bit annoying, they seem really flimsy and very long.
Merino Ruffle strata cardigan: Much thicker knit than I expected based on my other J Crew cardis. Has to be worn buttoned up or else it looks very strange. A little large, I would size down on this one.
Crinkled silk tempest skirt: LOVE the material and the shape of this skirt, but it's SO short! I'm only 5'2, so if you're even an inch or two taller this baby isn't going to cover your bum.

  25. Hi ladies!

I randomly bought the slim gingham tie from the factory (lol). If any of you ladies like that look, check out how I styled it w/ a blazer here!

  26. I too love the Camden Leather Brogues. The all leather constructions means they are very comfy and I can wear them without socks and have no blisters or anything. I have nutmeg which I've worn alot and black which are still new. They are great shoes. I just wear them in place of ballet flats and they seem to work every time.

  27. Library cardis, size M, in lt pewter and champagne (? - light tannish color) $20 each shipped or both for $35.

NWT Cheri Cami, size 8, bright pink, $20 shipped

Navy cocktail capri, worn once, size 8, $20/shipped

NWT Papaya, Silk Georgette Cami, covered buttons, size 6, $15/shipped

  28. Has anyone seen/tried on/got any feedback on the soleil mini? It says it's 18 inches, but it looks much shorter in the picture. Of course, J.Crew's pictures often are quite deceitful. TIA.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I don't have time today to review it on my blog, but I wanted to pass the news regarding the Harris Tweed blazer. I lusted after this last Fall but at $595 it was obviously not happening.
During the last 30% off I finally bought it. It rang in under $200. I LOVE IT. It is a bit longer in length, so covers my butt. Looks great with denim but also with some velvet wide-legged trousers I'd given up on. Also great with the pixie pants in navigator blue.
The tweed is the real thing and very amazing. For years I've been jealous of my DH's Harris Tweed blazers, they are apparently indestructible. Now I have my own, yahoo!, and it is big enough to wear over a sweater but still has some waist definition so is feminine.
I took my normal size 2.

  30. Maya: I bought the Odeon Oxford heels as well in a 7, my usual J. Crew size, but I had to return them :( They were just to tight. I bought them with the 30% off sale so now I have to wait for it again.

All: The shoes are beautiful! BUT buy a half size up esp because the warm weather is coming and your feet may swell like mine.

    ReplyDelete
  31. maya_thor, I'm glad you too love the Odeons. They're so beautiful, better than in the pictures. I think you were right to buy your regular shoe size, if you'd bought the half size larger you wouldn't have enough toe peeping through the toe opening. Yes, they are tight. I'm going to get some of that shoe stretching liquid and apply it to the leather lining, then wear the shoes around to stretch them out a bit. I might use it on the Collins upper strap, I'll have to test it on the underside first to make sure it doesn't stain the leather.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Courtney, they let you return the Odeons? I thought those were FS. I also bought them on the last 30 off and they are tight. I bought an 8, my usual size and while they *just* fit w/o socks, there is no extra room for socks or tights. I'd love to return them, but I was under the impression they were FS. Hm.

  33. Hi,
I am longtime reader, first time poster. Thanks Alexis for such a fun and informative blog!

Question for those who like the Camden brogues - do they run TTS? I'm a size 10-10.5 who usually has trouble with JC shoes. Sometimes I have to size up to an 11. Also, are they worth the FP?

    TIA!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Maybe this will win for oldest item reviewed, lol. ... Since it's going to hit 82 today, I've just busted out my zebra-print Blakely dress for the first time ever, and I love it so very much! Allllll the ladies at my work have commented on it this morning. I'm wearing it with the crystal/pearly symphony necklace and I feel so springy and light! Yay. I have this dress in light ginger as well; looking forward to wearing that this spring/summer too. :)

(FWIW, I don't have the outlet version of either dress, so I can't compare -- maybe someone can?)

  35. Kimchi Girl, that tie looks so cute on you, it's ridiculous. Love it with that outfit! :)

  36. Hi PatmosJD, I am a 10-10.5 as well... I bought a 10 in the camden brogues and they fit comfortably. However, I think an 11 would also work and give slightly more room (if you wanted to wear socks or something) without being too lose because they have laces and fit high on the foot. Not like ballet flats where I can't usually wear an 11... I could in these. I don't think they are worth FP but that might be just because I am cheap :) The leather is really nice and the lining is really soft. They are also very versatile!

  38. PatmosJD: I too think the Camden Brogues are TTS. I usually wear an 8.5 and that size fit comfortably on me.

However, I don't think the look of the Brogues is really "me"--I can't seem to make them work! If anyone is interested in the 8.5 pair (NWOB) contact me :) They are the nutmeg color. I'll sell for less than retail.

  39. Here are some recent reviews I've done:

Cecilia dress: LOVE this dress and bought in the orange color. TTS. Extremely decent length, thank goodness!

Orange Paisley pencil skirt: The print on this skirt is absolutely beautiful--stunning color, too. Also TTS.

Maritime Stripe hoodie: Size down on this. To me, it's not worth full price but it is more well done than the drapey stripe hoodie (quality-wise). I liked the fit and look of the drapey better, though.

Reviews and pics of the Lace-over tank, gingham vintage schoolboy shirt, and the swiss-dot dress are also in the link above. HTH!

  40. To Jruby18: I think you can return them even if they are final sale because you did order in your "regular size" but they do not fit as they should. You could call CS at Jcrew and tell them about it. Because it is not your fault. How are we supposed to know the shoes will fit when their sizing always "change"??? Just explain to them and they should let you return it. ( Just like a defective item: final sale does not mean defective and J crew does states that their merchandises are free of defect! ).

And Tamara : I agree with you too on the toe opening! So I am happy with my shoes the way they are. But I know they will stretch while wearing them because they are leather and suede.

  41. AppGal, it is funny, I have the same problem with my Camden Brogues. I bought them in Light Ginger and while they are adorable to look at (and comfy and well made) I haven't yet come up with an outfit that works for me, I feel short legged and stumpy in them (sniff, sniff). I listed them on this week's exchange as well (8.5 if anyone is interested).

  42. Barbabelle, thanks for the review on the Rialta Tweed Jacket. I've had my eye on that number for some time and was planning to go to the store and get it with the white card (which I amazingly received on Friday!). Sounds like I really need to try that one on, and definitely should not buy on Final Sale. Bummer, it is such a pretty jacket!!

    ReplyDelete
  43. J.CrewJD and AppGal: Thanks for your comments!

J.CrewJD: We were separated at birth - I am also cheap. :) I saw a size 10 in nutmeg on eBay for $99, but wasn't sure about the sizing. Maybe I'll go for it since so many JCAs seem to love them. Sounds like they are versatile enough to go with casual outfits and with suits for work.

  45. I agree with maya, a case can be made against the Odeon oxfords because they are exceptionally snug. None of my other J Crew shoes are that tight, and I haven't seen complaints about the other oxfords. When I tried on my Odeons and stood in front of the mirror to check them out, after only a few minutes my feet actually hurt, they were being compressed so much. But I love how they look and I'm convinced with the leather lining they can be stretched, plus they were only $70, I'm keeping them. But I too feel that it's not fair to the customers to sell an item that has such unusual sizing. This could be resolved by allowing customers to write comments, at the very least about sizing.

  46. Here are some reviews of some of the things I got from my last 30% off order and sweater promo:

Spangled stripe sweater / 40689 / Beechwood White. LOVE. So chic! Color is crisp white with tan stripes, gold sequins. The sequins add a touch of glamour but I love how it still gives out a nice casual vibe. It has exposed seams at the shoulders giving it a slightly deconstructed look, which might be off-putting for some, I don’t mind this at all. I got an XXS and it is nicely fitted, the stripes align nicely on the body and arms. I go between XXS and XS at J.Crew depending on how closely fitted I want the garment. I knew I wanted this to be slim fitted so I went with the smallest size.

Side zip sweater / 39094. Another LOVE. Crisp white, thicker knit than the above sweater, but didn’t feel bulky. I took an XXS on this one as well and liked the fit. Close to the body, arms are a bit tight but it stretches a bit. Neckline is very flattering. Hits me at the hips but I have a very short torso. At first when I tried it on, it made a weird shape at the sides were the zippers are, so I opened both zippers up just a bit and problem solved, it flares out just enough and shapes nicely. I wore it the very next day with my cotton bell skirt just like in the website product image.

Cotton Alexi sweater / 40511 / speckle natural (off-white). I got this in XS and was too big, I should have sized down to an XXS, so it’s going back. Other than that, it’s a well made sweater, lightweight but very cozy and soft, and I’m planning on picking it up when it hits sale. I also saw the cerise color in store and it’s really pretty, I might get it in that color too.

Camp pocket cardigan / 35750 / smoldering brick/ highland khaki. I’d say this fits TTS to small. I got them both in XS and just fit. Material is thin but perfect for spring. I’d wear this cardi only with camis or tank tops because the arms are skinny and sort of see-through. I love the silk pockets and all in all, they are both keepers.

Vintage cotton raglan tee / 41999 / olive tree/gray. I knew I wanted these a bit slouchy so I got them both in XS and fit perfect. I love these tops, very easy going and comfy and very flattering. I’m picking up the white as well.

Sorry for the long post. HTH!

  47. serinitysea, Is the navy cadabra an in-store only color? I just looked and it isn't online in any sizes. I haven't worn mine yet, so can't comment on the pilling. But that stinks. Maybe patina can join in - I'm pretty sure she has it too.

  48. Purchased the paisley pencil skirt in my b&m today. used the red phone to order cotton alexi sweater in speckle cerise to wear with it. alexi ran big and boxy - sized down. also got on list for maritime dress - only one in my store and not in my size. alexi ran big and boxy. . in store purchased dorrie chambray skirt. sized up to have it sit lower. love the feel of the chambray. very soft. tried and loved canteen pants - ps rolled up leg and i liked that look. sized down in those for slimmer fit. the loose blend linen jersey was on sale - wasn't marked as sale but rang up that way! fit tts. was able to use mickey card for all purchases including sale item and red phone order. JC red phone rep stated b/c I met $150 obligation in store discount would apply to red phone order too

  49. Thanks guys. I think I'm going to call CS and ask to be able to return the Odeons. They are cute, but I suspect they'll hurt my feet and I won't get the wear out of them that I should be able to. I think that's why they are such a great price. The fit is off.

I am also a 10-10.5 and I bought and 11 in the nutmeg color on ebay, and they fit great. However, I live in a very non trendy town and I've chickened out. i don't think I'll get as much wear out of them as I want- I'll sell them for $90 obo if you are interested!

  51. PatmosJD, yes, it does seem that way :)

And yes I wear them with jeans (the other day with jeans, my caramel arrow sweater (they are a perfect match) and a hot pink twyla tank.) as well as to work with suits. I have yet to wear them with a skirt or anything but I think it could look adorable!

$99 is reasonable for eBay pricing so I'd say go for it! I paid $70 and I am more than happy with my purchase!

  52. I love my Camden brogues in the light ginger color. I wear them with skirts and chinos and even with shorts - sometimes with socks, sometimes without. I find they also go nicely with skinny jeans but I prefer heels with my jeans so haven't worn them that way yet. They are quite comfortable and the look is understated, very wearable IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I am jealously reading all of your reviews of the ginger camdens..... If anyone wears a 6.5, and isn't in love with them, I'd love to take them off your hands!!!!

  54. Hi ladies - can I review Madwell here?

Dancing pleats cami (35136) - I wear a 2-4 in JC camis, and ordered the small in this. It fit well, but the band on the lower half causes the lowest pleats to kind of flare out, which didn't look flattering on me. Also, the "plaster" color looks white/ivory on my screen, but IRL it is pink (a little lighter than JC's heirloom pink).

Indigo-stripe outfield sweatshirt (40855) - No. Crewneck too high, too boxy in size S. No wonder the model has her arms crossed.

Silk canyon skirt (40645) - Pretty color. Sit very high on waist, almost under my ribcage. Size 4 just fit. I didn't love the length on me, but I think the biggest dealbreaker is that it is unlined - just a long piece of crepe de chine that felt very static-y.

So this MW order was kind of a bust for me, but I hope the reviews will help any JCA's! :)

  55. Thanks, J.CrewJD! I'm sold on the Camden brogues. Now to hunt down a pair that satisfies my thrifty tendencies. Sounds like

  56. BTW I am in need of a new JCrew bag. I'm eyeing the Coquette Hobo in the sale section (especially if it goes 30% off) in either the camel suede or black shimmer leather. Also considering Rhapsody satchel in olive moss on ebay.

Anyone want to weigh in on what these bags look like in person?

  58. 2 dresses:

First the good - Amie maxie dress in olive (only color currently on sale). I like this one much better than the short one, which I tried in store. Nice drape, strapless but top seems firmly in place. I took my smaller J Crew size, xs, which seems right. I think if this is too large it just has too much material and isn't flattering.

The not so good - Sirah dress. I had high hopes for this as a casual dress that isn't sleeveless which can be useful. But, the fabric just seems too thick. This would be uncomfortable in the warm part of the summer. Also, just too high waisted for me. I could try to size up but don't like it enough to try.

    HTH.

  59. Update on my Odeon oxfords..... my second pair is actually more comfortable than the first. I had to re-order because the first pair had a flaw (mis-applied strip of suede covering back seam). The second pair is great. I tried them on tonight and they are not painful like the first pair. Snug yes, but not excessively tight. They appeared to be totally factory-fresh, I don't think they were a return. I had no trouble walking around in them. I might not need the stretcher liquid after all.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Well...thanks to all of the JCA's...I must have the Camden suede brogues. I put the olive ones in my shopping bag and will wait for the additional % off :) I really want them!

  61. I know the Camdens are getting alot of love here, but has anyone seen/tried the Keaton cutout oxfords and care to review them? I like to show a little more skin, so am considering them instead of the Camdens....

  62. mommydearest: I think the navy might be a store-exclusive color, because I didn't see it ever pop up online. At first I thought it was black, and my eyes were playing tricks on me -- but it is, in fact, a true navy. One of the SA's had it on and two others had on the sweater in different colors.

I'm still debating if I will take it back or not. I love navy, and I love the sweater. I just don't love the pilling. :/

  63. On the chance that a 30% off promo is coming up, I reviewed the pencil ripple skirt on my blog here! I really love the skirt, but it fits a little snugger than my other pencil skirts.... (currently on promo for $88 - It would be a steal with an additional percentage off....)

    ReplyDelete
  64. I'm on eBay right now and see the Lottie Monk Strap oxfords. Those are really cute! J Crew has lots of nice flat shoes.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Serinitysea, thank you. I happened to see navy in the sale section today and thought I might give it a try. Sale was addtl 30% and I had my 20%. It was ticketed $59.99 but rang up $19.99!! So I paid $11.19 - for that price it is almost ok if it pills. On the hunt for fatigue... ;)

  66. Is anyone else finding that the Eyelet pencil skirt is running large? I have lost some weight recently but I just got the size 4 and it is just a smidge too big. ??? I used to be a 6 in J. Crew, now a size 4 due to the weight loss, but the idea of sizing down to a 2 for a pencil skirt is really too much!!

  67. I just bought the school boy blazer in chambray yesterday. Would love your tips on how to wear it. I like it with the sleeves rolled up - what shirt/accessories would work?

  69. Erin, I have that schoolboy blazer in the chino material.... I love it. I posted a few pics on my blog here. I think you could do something similar with the chambray. Any top, tee or blouse looks great under blazers in my opinion (but I might be a blazer-holic!). I think it would look great over the tee that is on sale in-store right now with the 'Big Daddy Lou' graphics and a pair of khaki pants or chinos!

(I posted this comment a minute ago, and my son was signed into my computer..... So the previously deleted post by Jack? sorry! that was me!)

    Enjoy!!!

  70. I'm always reviewing stuff that's been around for months. :) I bought the velvet Ruby jacket in weathered wood from an eBay seller and it arrived tonight. I'd read all of the complaints about it being shapeless, the tie belt (or some kind of belt) is definitely necessary IMO. It's generously sized, I ordered a 14 and it's almost too big for me. It was expectedly short waisted which looks funny with jeans but looks great with a dress or skirt (if with a skirt the top needs to be untucked). So I'm actually very pleased though I will say I'm hoping to score a tall. I love the color, I was afraid it would be too rust-y but it's more of a reddish-brown.

  71. I just ordered the size 12 tall velvet Ruby in the charcoal color, we'll see if that doesn't work better. I wanted to wait for a %-off promo but I'm afraid it would be gone by then.
