Get there first: UP TO 50% OFF new sale additions & FREE SHIPPING

"Thanks!" to many of you, including Fabulous Florida Mommy & MissMadaket (in this post), who shared the following email from J.Crew this morning.

J.Crew is letting customers know that several new items are making it to their Final Sale (click here to shop online).

J.Crew is also reminding customers to enjoy free shipping on $175+ with promo code SHIP175. This offer expires Thursday, August 17, 2011.

As many of you have pointed out, there have been quite a few updates after the 40% off sale of last week. But without the additional percent off and free shipping, the items do not look quite as enticing.

Also, it seems that several of J.Crew's brick & mortar stores no longer offer an additional percent off sale (as sale items are being shipped back last week and this week). Even though the sale sections in our stores might be dwindling, it means there will be a massive update in the sale section online in the near future.

Will you be checking out the Sale section? Are there any items you are hoping to see or to get?

  1. I saw Flannery pumps in the sale section. I want them, too bad they weren't my size. How does this happen? They've been sold out since like January.

  4. tamara.chicago - yesterday there were all sorts of new (old) things in the sale section. I nearly had a heart attack :) there was a cashmere hoodie in a color I never even knew it came in (that I love)but not in my size. Why do they do this...it seems a bit silly restocking reams of stuff with no extra discount for old (eg winter) items in August...

  5. My guess is that they're returns from people that realized they were still hanging unworn in their closet with tags, and wanted to get store credit toward new fall stuff. Of course, based on some JCA final sale horror stories they may not be NWT.

  6. Sale section 99% wiped out in my store = not going back anytime soon, lol.

  7. I agree with silver -- I think the supremely odd popbacks are returns that eventually make their way to the warehouse.

  8. Has anyone seen or tried the Sawyer purse? I am interested in a crossbody bag and this one looks interesting. Not sure how the pebbled leather would be?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Lizpoms I saw the Sawyer ... leather is nice and thick but it has a very "distressed" look to it. Read: almost beat up :)

  10. I am shopped out from the previous round, so nothing for me.

LizPoms, I had a pebble leather hobo from Liz Claiborne and it lasted forever. You also don't see every single little scratch on it.

  11. Tempted by the iris sandals in that lovely hot fuchsia, but resisting.

I did pick up the golden bubbles pencil skirt, it is so cute, and I think I'll get plenty of use out of it this fall/winter. I also got the muse tank because I am a sucker for wool jersey items. Not sure why... they are comfy without looking sloppy, perhaps?

But yeah... they need an extra percent off, or to mark things wayyyyyyy down.

  12. Anyone know the logic behind shipping things back to the warehouse? I cannot believe they do this. There is no way it is cost efficient to pay for the employee time (remove everything from the floor and pack up), plus shipping costs, plus fees involved with sorting and re-posting items on the website... I am sure there is some sort of thought-process behind this, but as a former retail employeee and a current finance specialist it seems a heck of a lot cheaper AND customer pleasing to leave stuff on the shelf and price kill it. Or, if they were to remove the final sale nonsense, they would probably sell more of the sale product. There have been a few items I literally started walking towards the register with but turned around when I got too nervous to purchase.

Anyway, apologize for the rant, and long story short I am staying away from the online sale section. But I will say that my annick swimsuit is adorable, and I did a little happy dance that I actually took a chance on that final sale. Bottoms are tied as tight as possible and I could have gone with the Medium, but for $17 they will be just fine.

  13. Anyone comment on the fit of the leather Coddington pumps? Comfy?

  14. Annie, not sure about the leather but I have the suede. The part of the shoe under the ball of the foot is pretty short. I jokingly wrote in a prior thread that these shoes aren't good if you have long toes. If you're doing final sale, it's risky. I usually take a 6.5 in other brands' shoes, I take a 7 in J Crew closed-toed shoes. The 7 Coddingtons worked for me. I have stubby toes. :)

I found the width sufficient. The high heel height is buffered by the platform. Mine are reasonably comfortable, for a high heel. I wouldn't want to walk 10 blocks in them though.

  15. Tamara.Chicago: Thank you! I'm glad I didn't place the order this am...I'm usually a 7 so I think that would have been too small. Good for my wallet, the 7.5 are sold out.

  16. I don't really know what goes on (but I do like the term 'supremely odd popback' :) At this rate there will be sale stuff from last winter online when they start putting new fall arrivals on sale....and on a different topic, though I know lots of people have had awful experiences with getting used stuff etc, I haven't ever had a problem, until one of my recent orders came on Monday, and considering the hoodie had, um, curly black hairs on it and my hair is long, straight and strawberry blond, well, it was obviously a return. All I could think initially was 'Yuck'!! Esp as I am sort of OCD about cleanliness, I mean couldn't they have at least used a lint roller....before repackaging, but then I figured it was the same as buying it from someone on ebay or something I suppose. Oh well....still..

  17. I am certainly not motivated to buy anything right now when I know I just got a lot of these items on super sale a week ago. (just got my boxes yesterday, love being all the way on the west coast!)

I am not sure why Jcrew has such a hard time with their sales inventory. It seems they have trained us to wait for sales, and their mark down percentage is unreal. I have bought two full prices ever and I paid (literally) for it 2 weeks later as they hit the sale section.

How does Anthropologie keep their sale sections under control (just a perception). I feel like they never or rarely deeply discount their items like JCrew.

Don't get me wrong, I love a good deal, but I worry that this behavior of managing inventory is going to hurt their consumers perception and brand altogether. I don't feel like I am investing anything when I buy a wool school boy blazer at full price, I feel like I am wasting a hundred dollars because I couldn't wait 1 month.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Such a glut of sale inventory, they should really review their pricing strategy. Over 200 pairs of shoes on sale, is that a record?

Of course not one thing on my wish list is marked down, at least not yet. I have had to ask my PS to find a few items, like the chambray shirt dress, for me because my size sold out at full price. I'm not much of a sale shopper anyway so it's best I just stick to my original list.

  19. J Crew is trying to clamp down on people returning items after months and months. On the return policy section of their website, they've sneakily removed the statement that says you'll receive merchandise credit for returns over 60 days. I spoke to CS about this and they said, all returns over 60 days have to be pre-authorized by them or they will ship the items back to you! No doubt, the customer will be the one footing the bill for return shipping. I expect to see fewer old popbacks in the coming months.

  20. Can anyone comment on the Caroline dress in Ikat? It went on sale this AM. TIA! Apparently with the "fabulous" $175 free shipping offer being extended until Aug 17 it looks like there will not be an additional percent off anytime soon! Oh, and that "fabulous" was sarcasm.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Oh hell! I saw that the "fabulous" $175 promo ended on Wednesday and I assumed it was ending tonight. August 17 is two weeks away!

The Flannery pumps still have me stumped. I started tracking these things in January, I think. I never saw them from then until this morning. So presumably someone had this size 6H pair for 5+ months and then finally decided to return them. Who would want to pay $199 for shoes that someone kept for 5 months? Guaranteed they won't be in the original box, won't have the cloth bag, probably won't have any of the original stuffing. Patent requires some care, did the person who was hanging on to them store them properly?

I was laughing because I have pinged the page for this shoe so many times, J Crew probably thinks that there's big demand for it and that's why the price is still so high. :)

Of course I'm such a loser and I've been wanting these shoes for such a long time, if they were available in size 7 I'd probably buy them even at $199. Just paint a big 'L' on my forehead.

  22. Eeeeeeeeeeeeek -- a HAIRY POPBACK! omg that is the worst ever. Worse than the tissues-in-pocket popback, even.

I had another thought as I was browsing. 'Extreme popback' is a good moniker for those loooong-lost items you chance upon while trolling the sale section. As in, I recall someone who found a retail cherry blossom item last year or something like that. Now THAT is an extreme popback. It would be like finding an Azalea Bella whilst examining the 1,453 items in the women's sale section. :P

  23. i was wondering if there could be a post on swimsuits. so many cute ones but so unsure about the sizing. i have chatted with jcrew (on the website) and interestingly they do not have measurements for the bust on some one piece swimsuits. they have waist and hip measurements only. what do you think about opening an entire review session on swim apparel.

  24. i was wondering if there could be a review session on swim wear. i have chatted online with chat specialists and have found that for one piece swim suits they often have wasit and hip measurements but not bust. so many cute ones and i am just so unsure about sizes.

  25. Josie, IME, the swimwear runs at least a full size small. This may not be true for tiny people of the 0/2/4 variety, but I'm in the 8-10 range with a smallish bust but a 38" band size ... and I usually wear a Medium top, but frequently must buy a Large or even an XL bottom.

I'm also very funny about how my swimsuits fit -- I can't bear the 'stuffed sausage' effect, so I will always look for swimwear to fit looser as opposed to tight.

Generally it's tough to properly assess what size(s) you need without trying on. :( Maybe someone here will have a similar body type to yours and give some ideas?

As a small-busted person, I find the padded underwire tops to be pure gold, but I also like the banded halter tops and the ruched v-neck maillots.

The hipster and boy-cut bottoms look ghastly on me, so I avoid them. HTHs!

  26. The striped button back dropped to 19.99 so I finally got it (and sucked up the shipping)...even though I'm still bitter they took it off the sale section for the duration of LOVEIT!

  27. Hey everyone. I am pretty new to to J. Crew and was wondering how often they have promos for an extra percentage off of sale items. I got some great items during the 40% promo and luckily they all worked out since most of it was final sale. Is there any rhyme or reason to their promos??? Thanks!!!

  29. If any one is considering the Cotton blousanna top on sale I reviewed it HERE

Any one have a review on the Bonnie Blouse? It was added today and I haven't noticed it until it hit the sale section. I haven't really heard any buzz on it....

  30. JessF- Do you have an hour? : )

There is sort of a pattern that they follow and over time you get used to it. In general it is when the sale inventory gets high in numbers, a new season comes, or they ship back all of the sale items from the stores (we are in this part of the cycle now).

The best thing to do is look at last years blog posts at this time and you can compare dates. It isn't always exactly the same but it follows the same pattern in general.

  31. New cuts noted at the top of this post.

LizPoms - Sawyer crossbody on Life's Divine.

  32. Thanks MegCrew. Sounds like the sales are pretty random. I will take your advice and sort through old posts. I think I am going to purchase a few more items as the stock is really low. I hate getting sucked in to sales!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Didn't the Bonnie blouse just come out two Thursday's ago? Why is it on sale already.... Maybe I am mistaken on when it came out.

    ReplyDelete
  34. elaine,
thank you for the info. about the swim wear. I especially appreciate the info. about the underwire, ruched and banded tops. I am 34b on top and petite6 on bottom. Any suggestions in terms of numeric sizing I was leaning towards a 4 or 6. Now maybe an 8?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Sara - Yeah, we're not crazy. The Bonnie is new. On sale already? Crazy. But it's promo, so we can expect some rubber in that price for awhile.

    ReplyDelete
  36. It's the second Thursday, so there are new arrivals!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Josie, it's so hard to recommend a size for you ... I would hate to advise you on something and then have you be stuck with it. :( If you're truly unsure, I would either use the livechat with customer service or call them on the phone -- they will have more info about how the different sizes and styles fit than I do. Good luck! It usually takes a few tries before you figure out the best sizes for you.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Your right ladies, it looks like the Bonnie is one of our recent arrivals. I'm sure it will be jumping back up soon, just didn't expect to see it yet...

    ReplyDelete
  39. Josie, I am not sure if this is late but I thought I would weight in since I just took a chance on a final sale swimsuit order.

For reference: I am about 5'10", 135-140 lbs, a small 34b, at VS I wear a medium top (probably could do a small but sometimes the tiny coverage just drives me nuts...) and a medium - large bottom. Recently purchased a Target swimsuit medium on top (same situation, could have done a small but it was just SO small) and a large bottom.

I was browsing the swimsuits online for quite some time, I always love the collection JCrew has but have been very nervous about the sizing. Especially since I searched this blog and found a lot of reviews saying some of the swim items run huge. Once the LoveIt deal popped up, I knew I had to take my chance. The Annick had been one of my favorites, and miraculously on Monday AM a medium popped up in the top. I found one review on here saying the triangles were cut a tad small on the top, so despite all of the other reviews I stuck with my normal Medium top and Large bottom.

Top fits PERFECT to me. Not one bit of padding which upset me before I tried it on, but I guess the combination of thick fabric and the stripes is enough coverage because I felt comfortable in it.

Bottoms... less perfect. But since they tie, I just have them tied as close to the suit as possible, not one bit of the "string" portion of the bottoms is visible. I won't be doing any diving in them that is for sure, but they are so darned cute I am ok with it.

Not sure if that helps at all... but I guess from my experience maybe size down in the bottoms. And find a review of the top, because I probably would not have pulled the trigger if I didn't find the one saying they coverage was on the slim side for the Annick, making me feel comfortable with the medium. Good luck!

  40. Just a quick comment, not sure if this is the right post to put it but oh well...

Has anyone else noticed that many of the New Arrival sweaters are photographed tucked in on the models? The merino turtleneck, cashmere turtleneck, etc. I wouldn't usually tuck sweaters like this in, and I am wondering if they are trying to suggest this style? It makes me worry that the sweaters are noticeably more cropped, which would be a dealbreaker for me.

    Thoughts?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Anyone know anything about the New Glamour swim top? Aka, why is it $9.99 and avaialble in every size still? Tempted to give this a try, but feel there MUST be something terrible wrong with it...

    ReplyDelete
  42. LizPoms, I think it's just a styling thing. It's the 70's look, and it does work well for the thin merinos.

I saw size 7 black Brittens this morning so I bought them. I already have two pair, this is the backup to my backup. :) I love these boots, I didn't wear my first pair very much since I bought them in the early Spring. I'm looking forward to cold weather so I can bring them out again. Great walking boot.

    ReplyDelete
  43. If my orders ever get here, I have a Bonnie coming and will review it. The Lucinda was very big, at least one size. The sleeves were very long and I have really long arms.

    ReplyDelete
  44. LizPoms, I noticed that too, but I thought it was because the sweaters were too long and looked sloppy untucked. I guess we will need to ask CS about length.
