J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  2. Am heading to my nearest b&m today and will make sure to take plenty of pics for a review post. Will post link later today!

  3. color questions:

has anyone bought the hoodies in "henna"? some of the pics online look more red, others look more rust.

and the bootcut cords? i'm loving the autumn bluegrass and weathered rose colors and just wondering how accurate the online pics are.

    thanks :)

  4. OT - I went to the largest of the retail stores in my area yesterday, and the entire sale section was EMPTY. They have a large room in the back of the store devoted to sale items, and it was literally bare shelves and empty hangers. SA said they shipped it back to the warehouse.

Anyone else notice this in their B&M's? Wonder if it means an extra % off in the future?

  5. OT: the SHIP175 promo is extended until 8/17. Does that mean we won't see any other offers until then? Boo!

  6. I went to a BM on Sunday that usually has an entire back room full of sale but it was completely cleared out as well.

  7. I picked up a couple of the tippi sweaters and a double serge wool skirt. My B&M doesn't have the brighter colors in the skirt but I will be in NYC soon and hope to pick one up there. Quality excellent on both items, I'm happy to report; wish that could be said about all of the fall line, but I've whined enough about that already!

  8. ruffles -- same thing at a couple of the NYC stores. I overheard an SA telling another customer sale would be back in a couple of weeks.

  9. I hear the number 2 wool pencil skirt is lighter wool than past seasons. Can anyone confirm?

I've ordered the Tippi leopard sweater and the pencil skirt in the camel color (something acorn?). I'll review when they arrive.

I reviewed the Pia calfhair leopard pumps on FFM's blog last week. Also received the Milano gladiator heels and the factory tortoise cuff from the last 40% off sale. Both get high marks!

  10. I used the red phone in store to order the puff sleeve popover in vibrant flame.

Cute top. I'd say it's TTS if you're not looking for fitted. The sleeves puff but not obnoxiously, and they have the sweetest little buttons on the arm. The fabric is a light cotton poplin that's not sheer in the red (I haven't seen the white, so I can't say).

The blouse is decidedly more retro and ladylike than I expect from J Crew, so I really like. It will go with all kinds of work outfits.

  11. I finally got around to posting an IRL photo of the Super 120s accordion dress on my block (link here). I also posted an IRL photo of the perfect snap tee (in size Small) paired with my school of fish print skirt (link here). This is a great t-shirt and I'm sorry they are not continuing the style into fall - the scoop neckline is low enough to be flattering but not low enough to be revealing. The longer elbow length sleeve is also very flattering. I'm kicking myself for not buying the navy when I had the chance - oh well. I did manage to snag the black colourway which popped back a couple days ago. A few of my LOVEIT promo parcels should arrive later today - not sure how my husband is going to react when he sees all the parcels...!!! :/

  12. I posted this review very late last week and thought I'd re-post it just in case it helps anyone...

Velvet Schoolboy blazer in Poppy: My first reaction was disappointment over the colour. It looks like a great orange on-screen, but IRL it strikes me as a bright but faded hot pink. Sad face. I tried it on, and the velvet is lovely and soft. It feels like nice quality to me, and isn't as stiff as I feared it might be. The fit feels oddly generous -- I ordered my usual blazer size -- the arms are looser than I've found JC pieces to be lately, and the body felt roomy through the chest, like it was a half size bigger than previous Schoolboys. I don't think I could go down a full size, but if you're between sizes I would suggest going lower.

Strangely, the colour is a bit schizophrenic, because in another room, it looks more orange than pink. At FP, I don't think I'll keep it, even if it starts to read orange in certain light. The fit just isn't flattering enough. Too bad.

Cashmere Ribbed Sweater (item 47922): This is so nice! Very soft, nice thickness. Definitely boxy. I sized down after reading the product description, because I wanted it to be a bit more "shrunken". I'm glad I did, because it fits more like a slouchy sweatshirt. It hits right at my hip bone, so a bit shorter than, say, the cashmere crewneck sweater. I love it. The Heather Gray is one of my favorite colours, it'll go with so many things. Because it's kind of cropped, it'll be cute with a longer shirt peeking out the bottom. I *think* it's the sweater shown with the dark purple wide-leg trousers from the fall look-book? Anyway, it's a keeper.

  13. can somebody comment on the 3-stone resin cuff in tortoise?
    is it worth FP?
    how does it fit size-wise?
    TIA

  14. I bought the origami skirt in size 4 which is the size I always wear in JC skirts and pants- The sizing has changed and I have to return-and size up - any one else have the same issue??? I do like the quality of the skirt

    ReplyDelete
  15. I love the origami mini skirt, I need to size up on this one too because of the fit.

  16. Probably not the most exciting thing to review, but I got the 7" chino shorts during the 40% off promo and I really like them. Good quality and fit and perfect length for me (I don't think I have the thighs for 5" shorts anymore). Fits TTS. Not too exciting, but a good basic for $21.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I posted this last night on the red blazer post but thought I'd add it here too.
I received the red schoolboy blazer today and love it! I compared it to my navy schoolboy from FAll 09 purchased at the Collection store in NYC: The buttons are identical! No change in quality in those since they are the same. The wool is slightly thinner and the under-collar is gray felt instead of wool as the 09 blazer is. The new one is top-stitched and has added the second front pocket on one side. The new one has also added two pockets to the inside. The lining is the same fabric (100% poly) but feels slightly thinner. The 09 blazer was 98% wool and 2% spandex; the new schoolboy is 100% wool.
I take a size 10 in the summer schoolboys and ordered a 10 tall, thinking it would make up for being shrunken and boxy, and a size 12 so I could wear sweaters under it. The 10 Tall is small and the sleeves are about 5" too long. It's going back! The 12 fits perfect with room for a sweater underneath.
    It's a keeper for me!
I also received the Hacking Cailey Cord Blazer #47601 in Purple Dawn. It's a beautiful jacket... beautifully constructed and really soft, but the fit is awful on me... too broad in the shoulders and way too small through the waist in a size 10. I don't think sizing up would help because the shoulders would be even wider. I've ordered the hacking jacket in the blue in a 10. We'll see if that fits any differently.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Can anyone comment on the fit & quality of the I Heart Chambray shirt? Have you seen it at your B&M? Was it full price? I'm debating whether to get it online since it's final sale...any comments will be appreciated :)

  19. I have one little review of an item that most people probably wouldn't even notice!

Pique stripe tank #48405... wanted this since I first saw it. Tried it on last week and bought... definitely size down. I am normally a 4/6, 34D and I had to get an XS. And it isn't tight, at all. I am almost always an S, sometimes a M, in J.Crew knits. Sounds like the petite among us may be sized out of this one even though there is XXS.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Posted this review on an earlier thread in case anyone is considering the Hacking Jacket:

I have the Hacking Jacket in Grass and I like it MUCH better than the new Schoolboys. The herringbone wool is nicer and drapier. It has a decent lining. It fits me TTS, but it is definitely longer in the body of the jacket and also the sleeves. For those accustomed to the schoolboy silhouette, the length is something that is quite different. The tailoring also seems to be a bit better, with pickstitching and the double pockets.

It looks best on me buttoned and probably with the sleeves rolled (I'm 5'4"), though I have toyed with the idea of having the sleeves shortened a bit. I also imagine I will wear it with heels or especially boots for proportion, though it's hard to imaging fall outfits when it is 92 degrees here.

Personally I won't be buying the new Schoolboy, but I may pick up another Hacking in the Flame color.

  21. milly, I have the I heart chambray shirt, LOVE IT. It's so cute! I took my now normal perfect shirt size of 8 (to eliminate gappage near the boobage, if you know what I mean). It fits perfectly. I say go for it if you have other J.Crew button downs and know what size to get.

I really think it is cuter in person than on the website... I was pleasantly surprised. I am not a chambray person but I could not resist the heart shaped pocket!

    ReplyDelete
  22. I posted a few reviews on my blog yesterday, including the Schoolboy blazer, Ruthie shirtdress and Gilded tweed skirt. See post here

  23. Milly -- I also bought and loved the Chambray heart shirt. I found it fit TTS, and it really is so cute IRL. Ultimately, though, I returned mine. I already have the Selvedge Chambray shirt, and the Heart one just wasn't different enough to justify keeping it. If it was on super sale I would snap it up, however!

  24. I got these two items during the 40% off free shipping promo:

Linen Bermuda Shorts in weathered wood: Love it! Like the clean lines and slimmer leg. Color is so pretty! Fits TTS. (Paid $18 for it.)

Factory Lace Yoke Tee in faded black: Love it too! Drapey, smooth, flattering. Quality is good. And oh the lace yoke at front and back! It makes the tee discreetly sexy and infinitely wearable. (Paid $12.)

  25. Has anyone seen the Fisherman Henley sweater IRL? Not sure if it is in stores yet as I do all shopping online (thank God for free ship promos). I am wait listed for it until the 8th. I am also thinking of purchasing the Thomas Mason boy shirt because I need a good quality basic white button down that isn't sheer. Hopefully my expectations aren't too high! Comments anyone?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Anyone have any IRL pics of hacking jacket?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Shannon, I looked at the two descriptions for the Thomas Mason tuxedo and boy shorts to see if they are made of the same fabric, and it looks like the are... the reason I did this is that I know the Thomas Mason tuxedo shirt is really sheer. If they are the same fabric then you might need to look elsewhere for a non sheer shirt. Unfortunate, because the fabric is lovely.

  30. Thanks J.CrewJD- you're right...I didn't think to compare the different Thomas Mason styles. So frustrating! I am having a hard time finding a 100% cotton white button down that does not reveal my nude colored bra. Not a fan of stretch shirts but have found they aren't as sheer so I may have to go that route.

  31. ina, I saw the 5-stone resin cuff in tortoise in the store and it was just about the only thing that caught my eye as far as jewelry goes. I have a skinny wrist and fits fine -- but you can wear it higher up on your arm for a tighter fit.

  35. I noticed they brought back the distressed denim belt. I still haven't received mine which was back-ordered from March or April, but has been shipped. I have this in black, but ordered it in tobacco. It's a great belt IMO.

It seems I can't type this morning.

  36. I received the Lillbeth sandals in black and barely peach, which were marked waaay down during the LOVEIT promo (and are now FP, hm). They're really cute, and a perfect option for when you want super casual, but just not a flip flop. They had quite a strong smell out of the box, but it went away.

Also in the box was the navy vintage cotton sequin tank, which I finally couldn't resist, and I love it. Got my usual XS and it fits nicely and is very comfortable. Will be lovely for fall/winter especially.

Finally, the Beatrice blouse in the brick color. It's a perfect match to the Aurora Tweed skirt. Delicate, but I think very pretty. Went with my usual blouse size in this.

  37. Although it was probably the tiniest item from the most recent roll-out, I ordered the Leopard Calf Hair Watch Strap the first day it was released and it just came today. I am happy to say it is very nice IRL. It has the same look as the skinny belt and the hair is nice and smooth, something I was concerned about due to the online photo looking a bit scruffy as if someone had rubbed the hair the wrong way! :)

Rose- I noticed the Distressed Denim belt is back too. I'm glad since I had considered getting it several times when it would pop back but never did. I'm happy to hear your positive review of the black one. Please post if the new one is of the same quality...TIA!

  38. Re: the No. 2 wool double serge skirts - my coworker is wearing the new heather carbon one (she bought it in store last week). I molested it and the weight feels the same to me. And it is lined. I have four skirts from last year (the first year they did the thinner waistband), so I know how they felt last year, but not sure if the 08/thick waistband iterations were even heavier. I just ordered the flame, viridian green, and heather acorn colors before they sell out totally. Last year, the Nordic blue and bronzed ochre never made it to the sale rack in my size. I got the bronzed ochre and am still glad that I bit the bullet and paid full price.

  41. Sort of OT but did anybody notice that the red dress from Fall 2011 Lookbook looks much longer on current J Crew website here (scroll to look 11) that it looked when they had Fall 2011 previews here? I actually dismissed this dress because of the baby doll cut, but seeing the new silhuette I am much more intrigued. I wonder it this was the feedback they got from customer inquiries? I seriously do hope it is NOT photoshopped to lure in the customers.Did any of you who preordered got the measurements?

    ReplyDelete
  42. Thanks, Lawyerette, for the info on the double serge. I heard from a friend in Florida that it was lighter so I ordered. If it's similar to past years, it's too heavy for me in Arizona. At least for anything other than our few cold weeks.

AJC, the link to the lookbook on the J. Crew website doesn't work. Apparently they took the lookbook off the site :(

  45. Hi Shannon, I have the white tuxedo Thomas Mason fabric shirt. It is sheer, but not enough that I felt like I had to wear a top under it. The boy shirt looks less sheer in the photos. The one thing that was disappointing was after I washed it I noticed a seam was not sewn correctly and there was a hole there(under arm/chest area)about an inch long. Normal J. Crew quality and workmanship for a $150.00 shirt.

    ReplyDelete
  46. ajc: I placed a pre-order over the weekend and have measurements for sizes 0 and 2:

Item # 47465 aka 'Teddie Dress' comes in Black, Camel, and Red

    $198

Size 0: Bust 33.5, Waist 27, High Hip 35, Low Hip 42. The center back skirt length for a size 0 is 19 3/4 inches

Size 2: Bust 34.5, Waist 28, High Hip 36, Low Hip 43. The center back skirt length for the 2 is 20 inches

It appears that you add about an inch each size you go up for the bust, waist, hip, and 1/4 inch length.

The dress is supposed to be 100% wool and lined except for the sleeves, if I remember correctly.

The size 0 in the Red is sold out already. I had hoped to order both sizes to try, but could only pre-order the size 2 since the 0 was gone when my PS went to place my order. The size 2 was close to being gone, as well. I was told the dresses should ship mid-August, which means they should be part of the next online rollout. HTH! :)

    ReplyDelete
  47. Love the red dress , but will have to skip it along with everything else wool if the sleeves are not lined

  48. Just posted a review of the Maddie Pant in Natural Linen and the Jcrew Factory corduroy schoolboy blazer HERE

  49. Went to the B&M today but did not see the items I wanted to try. No. 2 double serge skirt looks the same as last year, well-made and lined. Only the black & grey were in the store. Was expecting to be disappointed with the Schoolboy Blazer but I actually liked it. I personally prefer the thinner wool because it is less bulky when I wear it with buttondown shirts and merino turtlenecks. But the only item I brought home with me was the Chambray shirtdress. I've found my perfect shirtdress. Looks great with or without a belt, fits TTS. Well-made & does not wrinkle easily. This will be my uniform for the rest of the summer (and early fall with leggings.) Price is reasonable for a classic item, highly recommended.

  50. Some reviews...

3" chino short in Modern Red: These finally arrived in the mail. I was nervous about the color but bit with the additional 40% promo…but I LOVE THESE SHORTS. I’m treating these as a neutral and have already worn these so much since these arrived. Can’t wait now to wear with my Perfect Shirt in Leopard. Never thought I would wear red..but love love love!!

Silk Blythe blouse in alabaster: TTS, but too sheer for my taste. Wish this came in a cream with a bit more weight to it. I did see the extravagant green color out and it is a beautiful color in person. Would love to try the Elodie blouse or Lucinda blouse which may solve the sheerness issue if these arrive in stores.

City Mini in bright Dahlia: Loved the color and the length worked well on my 5’3 frame. It is a soft wool that is lined…but only up until the pleated waitband..which was my biggest problem. This skirt begs for something to be tucked into it. If you don’t, you may feel a bit uncomfortable. The wool waistband did not play nice to my bare skin…so I would definitely would also have to tuck slim shirt into it. Almost TTS for me. I could have sized down to eliminate some of bulk from the pleated waistband. Overall, not worth FP…but wish this color would pop up in another skirt soon for the fall.

Perfect Shirt in Leopard (Updated review): After consideration, I took this shirt back.  But..I ended up buying it again in a smaller size thanks to my mom. She loved it on me and loved the print as much as I did. She picked the right size for me too…and is going to fix the biggest problem..those dreaded “gaps” in between some of the top buttons by adding some hidden snaps in between. So glad this other store had the smaller size and now really like this shirt. Plus, it looks good with my new red shorts.

  51. Review of the Origami Sheath in Decadent red on my polyvore page... LOVE it! Highly recommend!

  52. Sorry to post OT, but could anyone tell me the item/style number for the paisley print scarf (same orange and blue print as the pencil skirt)? I can't seem to find it on J. Crew's website today.
    TIA!

  53. Julie - re: Thomas Mason
What a nightmare! I think I might spring for a Faconnable shirt. It is not too much more than the TM boy shirt and at least I'll have confidence it will wash and wear beautifully.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Went to the B&M store today in search of the Hacking Jacket, no dice...they said they probably won't have it until mid August or so.

I did see the new Classic Flare. For those of us who loved the High Heel Flare from a couple years ago, this jean is a great new version! It is high waisted but no gap in the back for me. The denim is a bit lighterweight and stretchy, but not clingy, and the flare has a bit more "drape" at the hem because of this, making them great for heels. I can't comment too much on sizing as I am still working on losing my baby weight, but my "bigger" size fit fine. I realllly wanted to bring them home but they are $125 and it feels so steep for JCrew denim. But oh, I love them...hmm.

Also saw a navy blue lace No. 2 Pencil skirt with a black grosgrain waistband. I don't see it on the website but it was very pretty. I will try to post pics and then post a link.

    Have a great evening everyone!

  55. FFM- I was able to order the red "teddie dress" size 0 today with a approx. ship date of the end of August. Here's hoping the wool will not bother me some how

    ReplyDelete
  56. Thanks FFM for the sizing info on Teddy dress. I ordered it today in red and camel (to try which I like better) but the red was sold out in my regular size 6 so I ordered it in 8.
The measurements actually sounded like an 8 may be a better fit anyway, especially in chest, but I have learned not to trust the measurements too much.
They gave me a ship date of Aug 23rd. I think this may be one of the items that will sell out quickly at least initially. Then it all depends if it fits well.
I know I will only keep it if the length is more like the latest picture if it is more like the March one I will definitely return it.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Marie, how did you find the length of the Chambray Shirtdress? It's en route to me now but I am concerned it may be way too short for me at 5'9". I saw it on Audreybella's recent Fall New Arrivals review post and I know that she is quite petite and it wasn't lengthy on her so I'm thinking it may be a return but I so want to love the style. Maybe my large bust will save me this time since I have to go up 2-3 sizes larger than my usual skirt size when buying J.Crew dresses. Here's hoping there is extra length in the larger size.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I decided to exchange the Cavalry Skirt for the Chambray Dress. I think it's way more practical and will look really cute a number of different ways and go through at least 3 seasons. It is on the shorter side, so I plan on mostly wearing it w/leggings or skinny pants, like the Pixie or w/tights and boots. It does run a little snug through the underarms/sleeves, so I went w/the larger of my 2 sizes. I also got the Tippi sweater in the leopard pattern and it's really cute IMO. I know some others aren't crazy about it, but it's going to look great w/many pants and jeans and skirts.

  59. fshnonmymind- nice review:> I really liked the lavender toothpick cords on you and the flame minnies! v. cute !

  60. I second shopwithm on the Lillibeth flat sandals. I got the black and the neutral (which is a very pretty nude with blush undertones.) Ordered a size 7 for my 7.5 narrow feet and they are perfect. Wore the black flats with white cropped jeans, and the nude color with rolled army fatigue boyfriend chinos and grey camisole. Love!

I also got the Bronwyn hobo in canvas. This surprising is very, very cute. The canvas is rough, mind you, and is darker than it appeared on website, but that's ok, as it might not show dirt so much. Great neutral bag to carry you into fall with boots and jeans and a white button down, if you can find it for a great sale price.

  61. 1. Tippi sweater: beautiful colors, great fit.
    2. Minni pant in bi-stretch wool: unlined= very scratchy, way too uncomfortable to keep, which is a shame b/c the fit is great.
    3. silk-spun sweater- beautiful, runs a little large but well fitted and very soft
    4. pointelle beach cardigan: fabric is not the highest quality but it is soft the fit is flattering
    5. Dolman sleeve sweater dress: I must have a different or faulty idea of what dolman sleeves are b/c the sleeves were fitted, the only thing that was loose was the middle of the dress, making it quite unflattering. But the fabric quality was high

  62. Xoxo, I took a size 6 in the Chambray shirtdress & it falls just slightly above my knee. I'm petite (5'1"). I saw it on a mannequin and looks great at midthigh. Hope it works for you!

  63. Miss JR - I haven't seen anything in henna this year, but I was disappointed in Jackie in henna. Not at all what it looked like online. The hoodie may be different because the colors come out in different saturations based on fabric.

  67. Hi ajc and susan, I am trying to find out about the fit of the Caroline dress in the Ikat print. I see you two mentioned trying it, but I was unsure of the fit. Is it the same as the other Caroline dresses? Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  68. I know many JCAs have bought the Accordion dress. I am wondering how the length is? It'd need to be knee length or just slightly above for me to get it. I just love the buff color! Did anyone with a larger bust size down? Unsure if I should get a 4 or a 6... 6 being my normal size currently.

    ReplyDelete
  69. hi Shekster, I think it is the same fit as other Caroline dresses but I never tried others. I remember that the color was soft and flattering and it was slightly above the knee and TTS but a little tight at the chest on me (I tried my usual size 6 and I am 34D). It is quite structured and substantial fabric, which is nice if you want to wear it to work, but a bit constricting for a summer dress (but maybe it was because it was tight at chest). Sorry I cannot be of more help but it was awhile ago.

  73. Cavalry Skirt:

The skirt is well made and substantial, pretty much 4 season wear in my book. I sized up from my pencil skirt size because the waist is pretty small on it.

At first I was not sure about the 70's trend But I am starting to feel it. This skirt is different from (at least) 20 pencil skirts in my closet. I can wear it to the office, but also everywhere else. I love that it is machine washable. The length on me is the same as on the model (I am 5'6"), it is the same length as most of my pencils. I think this is a perfect length and if it was longer it would be frumpy. I love it with delicate kitten heels and pink or purple cardi.
It is rather trendy item and not sure if it is worth a full price but I think I will get a lot of use of it, at least this season.
I know other retailers are coming up with similar skirts for less, but it is all in details and has to be done right to pull it off. I think J Crew did it this time.

  74. I got the Madewell Belladonna skirt and it's really nice! The jersey fabric is weighty and drapey so it hangs really nicely. The pockets are constructed very well and don't add any width to the hip area. The color is a nice dark grey, bordering on charcoal. I bought an L and it was sized generously, I'm a 14 bottom and would normally take an XL but that size wasn't available so I bought the L. It fits great, but it could easily fit a size larger or smaller too. I think this is going to make a very nice early fall skirt. Beware if you need to hem the skirt, it will probably only look right if you recreate the original coverstitch hem using an overlock machine.

  75. Popped in today and tried on a few things:

Origami Mini - love the unusual color pairing. I did find this one to run small. I am always a 2 in pencil skirts and usually a 4 in other skirts. This was snug in a 4. I think the shape is really flattering but the 4 sat ON my belly button which is too high up for me. I think a 6 would be perfect but they didn't have any

Tippi Sweater - heather grape and viridian are lovely. I think it's a nice sweater, fits TTS but nothing special at full price.

Ruthie Shirtdress - flattering cut but I don't think it looks like anything 'new' and the colors are boring. Also - I would recommend sizing up on this one. My normal 2 was not only tight across the chest (there really needs to be an extra button) but was a bit snug on the hips as well. I was too lazy to try on the 4.

I did LOVE the Linen Sundown Cardigan (TTS) and the new green color of the Silk Blythe (which i think you can size down on)

On a side note - also went to factory and did not even try on 1 thing. Everything looked so cheap and nothing new.

  76. I've found the weekend knit pants with ankle zipper to be running 2 or 3 sizes small. Am I hallucinating? Not near BM so it is back and forth in the mail!
