J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. I have a question! Does anyone know when the J. Crew stores (not outlets or factory stores) will be having another one of their huge sales? A couple weeks ago, half the store was on sale and there was an extra 40% off it! Does anyone how often this happens or when to expect another? Thank you!

  3. I know its not clothes, but I think I am completely in love with the Darlington Satchel. I scored one in the bright indigo, and I get a ton of compliments on it. Good storage too, my only complaint is that I think the gunmetal hardware is going to show wear pretty quickly.

  5. Good morning JCA's.
I reviewed the merino knit pencil skirt and the Betsy sweater today on my blog!

    ReplyDelete
  6. Received my Blythe Shirtdress in Dark Navy yesterday. LOVE. Fits TTS, not too short, the silk is so pretty. I'm not big on self-belts so I will probably swap it out for a leather one.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I received both Valentina and Mona leather pumps. I ordered my normal JC ballet flats and heel size but I found the Valentina to be very stiff and snug. Mona was a bit softer but felt snug as well. I've exchanged them to 1/2 size larger and will see how those fit. Both heels are beautiful on the pictures, but close up, both leathers had some tiny black spots and various "worn off" spots. Both smelled pretty badly of glue, and the Valentina pair also had dried glue clearly visible on one of the heel. I hate paying so much for these heels...can anyone suggest where I can get a comfortable yellow and red leather heels?

  8. I think I reviewed these last week but I'm not sure! The Eddie Borgo leather bow pins are fabulous. Small and pretty, with an edge because of the leather and studs. Perfect for a jacket lapel. The no. 2 pencil skirt fit like a dream. The camel color is a great neutral. The daylong shirt was the surprise win of the order. The buttons come up high enough to be decent for the office, it's light enough to go under a jacket, the fabric is so soft. I wish it came in more colors.

I had ordered the Pia pumps quite some time ago. I returned the first pair because of a discoloration on the toe. The second pair arrived last week and has already been returned. The platform was visibly separating from the shoe. I'm awaiting the third pair now, which is on back order.

I have the liquid silk skirt coming and I'll review it when it arrives.

  9. DaniBP - Thanks for all the great reviews on your blog. I was thinking of buying one or two of the Betsy sweaters. I wonder if sizing down would help with the boxy, shapelessness. I think they have it in xxs. Of course this won't help with the see through issue, ugh!

    ReplyDelete
  10. jcrewphd- Thanks for the pumps review. I desperately am searching for pumps or midheels or kitten heels; would love to hear peoples suggestions.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Talbots had some really cute midheel pumps in yellow and red, but they are sold out in most sizes now :( Some were slingbacks, not sure if that's a dealbreaker or not.

Hoping they will do a restock, though. Their shoes are largely more comfortable and higher quality than J.Crew shoes, in my experience. Sizing is similar as well.

    ReplyDelete
  12. pathos and jcrewphd, I recently bought couple pairs of kiteen heels from Talbots and I am very happy with them. They are better quality (all leather), more comfortable and half the price of JC shoes. I got a pair of yellow slingbacks I am very happy with. They had patent kitten heels in red, those sold out online but I saw them in store. I had great luck with shoes at Nordstrom Rack. Any department stores like Lord & Taylor or even Macy's will have better selection, quality and prices. Even Bloomingdales or Saks on sales will provide better value.
Honestly, J crew shoes are total ripoff and they only look good under influence of crewlade and if you are not looking anywhere else. jmho.

  13. Hi, does anyone know of somewhere else online that I could post a want ad for a Jcrew item(that's 6 years old) that I'm looking for? I would love any help.

  14. I know that someone reviewed the velvet Schoolboy, but I can't find it on my BlackBerry. Can someone please point me to a review.
Also, has anyone seen the Bristol Blue color in real life?

    Thanks!

  15. I suspect the vast majority of you may have seen this, but for those of you who haven't, I did a review of the Teddie dress in the red color on Friday night.

    Featherknit stripe boatneck tee
    Piqué stripe tee
    Vintage cotton stripe baseball tee
    High-waisted skinny cord
    Blythe blouse in silk
    Coastline-stripe tee

  19. Tried on the Encore Trench - the one with the detachable tulle underskirt - yesterday and fell completely in love. Very stiff very nice cotton and just layers beautifully. Now I just have to convince myself to afford it.

Also loved the cashmere cable sweaters - I've been burned by jcrew cashmere before but the incredible softness plus the incredible color is going to do me in.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Totally OT: Just got an email from lillypulitzer.com - fantastic summer sale. The prices are unbelievable. Free shipping on any order, too.

    ReplyDelete
  21. shopalot, I just frantically looked through their sale section when i got the e-mail. A lot of the really good stuff is sold out, but I managed to get a gorgeous merino scarf for $24. It is blue and green, emerald really, will go well with alot of J.Crew's fall pieces.

Cashmere lovers, Lilly cashmere is very high quality and they have some great pieces on sale. Such as the long sweater coats. The colorblock in red and pink is very reminiscent of J.Crew from years past. And for only $100! Highly recommend for disgruntled JCAs, hehe. Sorry to go OT but I had to add to what shopalot said!

    ReplyDelete
  22. JCrewJD - I ordered the very same scarf! It looks gorgeous. Can't wait to get my order. With the free shipping, I figured I'd take a chance. It's not final sale, so if things don't fit, I'm not stuck with it, unlike ANOTHER retailer. The dresses are to die for, unfortunately I don't need a new summer dress.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hi All! I ordered the Ruthie shirtdress in my normal size, 0P. The dress was waaaay too short for my comfort level. In order for it to fit like it is shown on the website model, I'd have to order a regular, but then the bodice would probably be too low. Also, my skin unfortunately doesn't like animal fibers and even the 10% wool made me itch like mad. I'm totally bummed about all this because this is such a super cute dress.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Apropos of nothing ... some had asked about the durability of the FACE Stockholm nail polishes that JC is selling, and I'm here to tell you they're amazing. A full 2 weeks went by before the Hot Pepper (pinkish-red) color started to wear off the very edges of my pedicure. I never even got an actual chip. Compared with the brands I usually wear (Essie and OPI), this is very noteworthy!

So there you go. I'll buy more of these in the future. :)

My MUSTSHOP order from yesterday morning has already been delivered -- it's sitting my porch at home waiting for me. Impressive! If anything is particularly interesting, I will share soon.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Correction: If you're shopping the Lilly Pulitzer sale, you can exchange sale items or get a merchandise credit. I was reading the regular return policy, not the sale.

Sorry OT again, just wanted to clarify.

  26. Re: shoes, I agree with ajc. The quality and styling has really declined. I used to buy their shoes like crazy, and although they have always been uncomfortable IMO, I was willing to buy bc they were so beautiful and so unique. Now I find similar styles and quality at Target, and with JCrew's visible glue and sythentics, that is not an exaggeration (see Martina and Target's Milena wedges, for example).

  28. very expensive Collection item discussed at tedious length here

    ReplyDelete
  29. Wow, I really wanted the Valentinas, and to do an entire JCrew outfit with these pumps. I think asking >200 for their shoes is koo-koo too.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Is anyone familiar with the Sandswept paisley pleated halter tank swimsuit. Wondering about size and bust coverage?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Anyone try the Comrade pants (item #49517)? Currently on sale for $49.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Pathos, I am curious about the Comrade pants, too. Never saw them in my local store so I have no idea how they fit or what size to get. Anyone have a review/pictures??

    ReplyDelete
  33. I got the Double-cloth townhouse trench and I am sending it back.
It is a very pretty design, but the fabric and fit didn't convince me. I found the fabric too thin compared to my old coats, too stiff to flatter the design of the coat. Surprisingly this one runs TTS/small. I am a P0 and usually P0 or 0 fits me well. This was a tiny bit tight. A nice coat but not a piece I would add to my collection. It is pretty but not too versatile.

  34. The UPS man just brought the double breasted sweater-jacket and he's going to take it back tomorrow. I'm very disappointed.
    1. I did order a size up thinking I'd actually wear it as a light fall jacket. Fail. Way too big. Not J.Crew's fault, but order your correct size.
    2. The material feels thin and cheap and the little fuzzy balls had already started to form. I had to sweep the floor after trying it on and run the lint roller over my tee shirt. I can only imagine how it would leave little fuzzy crumbs all over the furniture and my clothes.
    3. The leather buttons are cute, but seem to heavy for the material. They pull through the button holes and hang -not attractive.

    4. the red color is really bright and has a bit of an orange undertone IMO. Not flattering on me.

So, sorry to be the bearer of bad news but this sweater is a big mess and I wouldn't even consider it on super sale with free shipping and certainly not for 148.00 bucks.

On a positive note, the around town sweatshirt is adorable and I love it. Can't wait for cooler weather.

    Have a great day!

  37. I've just received some things and I ended up liking what I thought I wouldn't based on previous JCA reviews, and hating what I hoped I would love!

The Hutton tie trouser in henna is gorgeous. It seems to me the tie is wider than it looks online, but I'll have to double-check. It is cute, but presents some challenges as to how not to make it look awkward. The pants are unlined and longer, to wear with heels, but they may be too long for me still (I got a petite and am just barely 5'4"). They fit very well (TTS) maybe because of the lack of lining--a real "wow" piece.

I love the merino pleated skirt! I thought I would hate it based on what others have said. To clarify some things that others have mentioned: the pleats are created by alternating sections of knit stitches and purl stitches. The "raised" pattern some have mentioned is because the skirt is getting wider as it progresses to the knees, so stitches have to be added periodically to rows, which creates what may look like an irregularity. This was TTS and the saddle color is a nice camel shade.

The Teddie dress was an absolute disaster on me. It is SHORT. It has a tulip skirt that puffs out--this, combined with the high waist, has a baby doll effect. It is unlined in the arms (I'm not partial to perspiring directly on wool). The red color borders on neon. And the zipper, which I was ready to accept, is rather industrial looking. So sad, as this was the piece I was most looking forward to for fall!

The boy shirt fits very nicely and is soft, for those who might be looking for a perfect shirt alternative.

    ReplyDelete
  38. UPS just delivered a couple of my J.Crew items and I have to say how disappointed I am in the Hutton tie trouser (charcoal). I had such high hopes for these, but they are unlined and a bit itchy. The fluid drape is fine, and I can even handle the awkward way the tie hangs (not as nice as in the pics), but the lack of lining is a terrible letdown for pants priced at $168.00

Sadly, I think I'll have to return them.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I reviewed the No. 2 pencil skirt double-serge wool in the jazzy purple color here:
    http://alldressedupnoplace2go.blogspot.com/2011/08/jcrew-review-no2-pencil-skirt-in-double.html

It's gorgeous IRL, and although it's sold out online, I'm wondering if there are any available in the stores.

    ReplyDelete
  40. An addendum: I'd be interested to know what others think of the "raised" pattern on the merino pleated skirt. Now that I look at it more closely, I'm not sure I understand it. In any case it doesn't bother me, I don't think. The skirt looks great with the tall Booker boots (which I love).

For me the Hutton trousers need 3" heels. I'll wear up to 2 1/2" before crying uncle. I hate taking things to the tailor, but they are by far the most flattering trouser I've ever had on.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Has anyone tried on or seen the Adrianna Buckle pumps? I have this idea that I need the golden yellow satin pair and need to wear it Double-cloth townhouse trench in the mustard color. I have already heard a "neutral" review on the coat...which makes me sad. Does anyone have anything to say about either one of these items?

    ReplyDelete
  42. MegCrew, I enjoyed your reviews. I now want the Featherknit stripe boatneck tee, Coastline-stripe tee, and Blythe blouse in silk! I hope you got the Dolman-sleeve tee. I have it and wear it all the time. Love the slouchy look and it looked great on you.

AllDressedUp, looove that jazzy purple skirt on you. I want it even more now. They need to restock it soon!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Sadness, the Teddie dress was a disaster on me. Too short and poofed out right at my belly. Didn't like the zipper, but I can see how some might like it. Sad, I really wanted to love it. I'll post pics in the next few days hopefully before I return it. There is a Talbots red ponte dress that I'm eyeing and will hopefully try on as a possible option.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Count me in as a fan of the Hacking Jacket! Just received the bright flame color...it is so yummy. Fit is lovely, too. Will hopefully get a chance to post pics tomorrow (provided I can get some relief from this sinus infection!)

    ReplyDelete
  45. Ditto to Nobelle's post on the Townhouse Trench. I am bitterly disappointed as this was the one item I really wanted to love. I am a fan of the double cloth, but it is too stiff in this design. The belt will not even wrap or tie nicely. Also, I ordered my usually size 4 and it is snug, even over only a lightweight shirt.

It also seems a little darker IRL than I was expecting.

    ReplyDelete
  46. 31" inseam on the Petite Hutton tie trouser is just too long for me. It's a shame too, because otherwise it's a beautiful pant.

    ReplyDelete
  47. classic leather ballet flats - I always size up 1/2 size and I thought these were comfy. Wore them for a little over an hour. Definitely want the red and/or purple on sale.

hacking jacket - love this and my normal JC jacket size was fine

high waisted skinny cord - sized up one from toothpick cords. Love these, but why don't they come in short?

shutterbug dress - loved it so much I bought it. Size down. For me, it's better without the belt, but I don't/can't wear belts.

winnie dress - size down at least once, more if you're not broad shouldered and larger chested. It made me look hippy, so it's not for me. Very comfy, though.

fishermen's henley sweater - LOVE! But HATE the price. Size down. I am hoping that I can get this one on sale. Only saw the champagne, but would take either color I can get.

dearie dress - love the getaway green color and the fact that it had pockets, but hated everything else about this dress. While my ps loved it, it was too short and not flattering IMO.

vintage tweed pencil skirt - tts, but at least 1/2 of them were already picked. Also a little long and dowdy on me (5'4"). My guess is it will go on sale soon as it was so shopworn after only 4 days.

wool pencil skirt - I wish these fit my lifestyle b/c I love the veridian green. I'd pick it up on a good sale in viridian green, which is a beautiful color!

flare jean - LOVE LOVE LOVE these! I sized down from my toothpick size. They have a high enough waist to suck in my love handles, but not as high as the high waisted jeans or cords. They are super stretchy and so flattering (and this from a girl who LOVES her toothpicks and downtown skinnies). I am hoping that the short are short enough to not need more hemming. They're on their way and hopefully will be here tomorrow.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I got the Viridian Green pencil skirt and LOVE it! I don't really need another pencil skirt, but I'm keeping it. I got it in my size and would say it fits TTS. I also got the Flare jeans and really like these too. I got the short length and they're still a little long, but I think once they go through the wash, they'll be perfect. I'm 5'4" for reference. And I got the leopard print blouse and really like it. I got a sz up from my usual JC top, as I do for all of their Perfect Shirts. I am thinking it might be more versatile than the leopard Tippi.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I received the No. 2 Pencil Skirt in Plaid today. I agree with others that the fabric is a little thinner than the double-serge. It's also cut a little slimmer. I took a 2 in the other pencil skirts and will need a 4 in this one. That said, love the plaid.

I also received the Flair Skirt in Cool Pine. I LOVE the color, but I'm not sold on the fit. The pleats are a little large for such a heavy fabric, which puts a lot of volume in a place I don't necessarily want it. ;) Still thinking about it.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I know it has been discussed already but could anyone could let me know if the Origami dress fits TTS and how short it is? I need a dress a little bit on the conservative side and I can't do another short dress. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  51. A long time follower of this blog (and lover of J. crew) I thought I would finally throw in my two cents after pretty much breaking the bank on the fall collection...

Like everyone else, I absolutely loved my No 2 pencils in Viridan Green and Acorn. Fit TTS and I'm loving the slightly longer length this year.

Splurged on the Mona leather pumps in pale peacock and while I LOVE the color, agree that the quality probably doesn't warrant FP. Had to go up half a size from my ballets.

Loved the cut and color of the Hacking in charcoal which was also TTS but was slightly itchy. I don't think it will bother me with a shirt underneath though.

I'm still out on the Teddie dress (in red). The tags are definitely still on. As many have mentioned, it is SHORT. I'm ~ 5'9" and I'm not sure even letting out the hem would make it work-acceptable. The unlined sleeves are also scratchy. I got my usual size 4 in dresses and the bust was a little tight (and I have nothing to speak of there!), but I think the size up would have lost the fit elsewhere. With flats and a cute belt it was a cute dinner/date outfit but not sure if I can justify the price.

Interestingly, the Hutton trouser in Italian wool was very long. I tried them on with 3" heels which makes me 6'0" tall and the pants fell to the floor and were still maybe slightly long. I took the 6 regular and aside from the length they were TTS. I don't know if the inseam is shorter in smaller sizes?

And with that, I'm locking up the card...

    ReplyDelete
  52. Received the Teddie dress in the mail today. I'm not sure about it, which means it will probably go back. It looks sort of "shrunken" on me (5'6", size 6 fit perfectly). It looks a bit cheap, I think it's the color. For $200 I wanted to love it, which I didn't.

I also received the Symphony coat in red. It's a very nice coat, but not that great for $350. I wish it had a cool lining like their coats did in the past. Remember the Lady Day with that beautiful floral lining?

    ReplyDelete
  53. I tried on the Winnie Dress on Friday and loved the look of it. I am consistently a 0 in dresses (sometimes a 2 if it runs tight through the bust) and I needed the 00 in this one, so I would say it runs a bit big and you should be safe to size down. I am 5'9 and felt that the length was work appropriate, even in the smaller size.

It is very comfortable and I don't think it would be prone to wrinkling. My issue is with the fabric - a mix of acrylic, rayon and nylon. It also looked a bit fuzzy already and I wonder if it would pill. This is one that I would love to snag on sale, but I don't feel okay about spending $138 on a dress made from that material.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Teddie dress:
Ordered my usual size 6 in saddle and 8 in red (6 was sold out). I am 5'6", 34D and wear size 4 in pencils. 6 was a disaster, high waisted, short and shrunken.
8 was much better fit, significantly longer and surprisingly the skirt portion was less puffy and despite plenty of extra fabric in the hips it looked ok. So maybe sizing can help some with the fit.
Length in size 8 is about 2 inched above my knee (comparing to double serge pencil in size 4 that hits me rigth at the knee) and there is additional 2" in the hem.
Nevertheless, it is a return for me, I did not love it and the color is very pretty, but too neon to wear to work. I could wear to go out or to the party but I have plently of party dresses I like more. The sleeves were too wide and too long on me. And I did not like the feel of the fabric for some reason. Unlined sleeves and the zipper did not bother me.
I think the zipper looks better irl than online.

Saddle color was hideous on me. It is much darker than camel and very muddy.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Wool cafe capri in baked citron.

I alredy reviewed dahlia version so only wanted to comment on color. I wanted mustard tone and I was afraid since it is citron it will have neon acid green undertones. The actual color is pretty, definitely more mustard than neon, but much clear yellow than ochre.

NO 2 pencil in brigth flame.

Love the color and I think this will be my red item this season. For some reason I was puzzled what to wear with it but after going through my closet and trying things on I found plenty of options.

I am curious about the wool crepe decadent red skirt in comparison, anybody tried it on?

    ReplyDelete
  56. Reviews of items I tried some time ago in store but it was not online so I did not know the names.

    Cashmere rugby-stripe V-neck sweater

Loved it. I could go with S or M but I like the slouchier fit of M better. I think it is meant to be slouchy and sizing down did not make it fitted anyway. Plus, I wash my cashmere in washing machine (with great success, dry flat only) so it shrinks a little bit and I hate the skin tight arms.

    Blythe shirtdress
I could not wait to get it off. It was a sister wife wearing her daughter dress on me, the silk was wrinkly and high maitenance. Belt was making it worse.

    No2 pencil in vintage tweed.

Loved it, the color was very pretty. I did not feel it was too bulky but I have narrowish hips, so this is rarely a concern to me. I have enough tweed skirts, so I passed at FP, but I would get it on sale.

  57. I pre ordered the Brompton satchel back when they showed it in the look book. I got it just yesterday. I was not expecting it to be so HUGE! It doesn't have 'feet' on the bottom either, and its heavy to top it off. :( Perhaps it's because I'm petite, but I think this bag is way too big for me. It's going back :(

    ReplyDelete
  58. Good morning JCA's.
I reviewed the Telegraph wool flannel pencil skirt suit today on my blog.
    I love it: keeper.

I also tried the Icon Trench in wool cashmere, the camel color. I sent it back. The camel was quite dishwater hued to my eye. The fit was okay, nothing special. The fabric is 5% cashmere and a whopping 20% nylon, 70% wool, soft enough I guess. The lining was nothing exciting.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I bit the bullet and ordered the Double-Cloth envelope Coat. I couldn't resist. It's waitlisted until mid-September, but I'll be sure to share my review when I receive it. I purchased it in Heather Caramel. I have high hopes for this one, so I hope it doesn't disappoint. Heather Majestic Purple was another fave, but I figured the camel color would be more classic, especially in this silhouette.

    ReplyDelete
  60. @Tiffany - I am so sad to hear a less-than-stellar review on the Brompton Satchel. I really fell in love with it in pictures, but the fact that it doesn't have metal feet is a complete deal breaker for me :(

    ReplyDelete
  61. Today I'm wearing the No. 2 Pencil Skirt in leopard. Fits true to size and I like the slightly longer length. Although it is cotton it seems to be resisting wrinkles pretty well.

Photo on my blog and I'd love to hear your thoughts on other styling ideas.

  62. ajc - I had the Index Dress in Decadent Red in the wool crepe material. It is just a bit more red than the Vibrant Flame, but still has the orange undertones - it is definitely not the deep blue-based red I was hoping for and it is quite light. HTH!

    ReplyDelete
  63. I received the Liquid Silk skirt today in dark navy and I'm in love. The silk is gorgeous, the color is very rich. I would like pockets, though that's not a deal killer by any means. It's shorter than the Madewell Silk Canyon skirt, which I also own. It hits just below my knee. It's TTS and has the perfect amount of fullness with no gathering at the waist to add bulk. I'm in a warm climate so this will be year round wear for me.

  64. I reviewed the wool cashmere Icon trench on my blog today!

  65. I just posted a review of the Gallerista Skirt here on my blog. :)

  66. I was able to try Valentina leopard pumps in store yesterday. They are actually quite comfortable but I had to size up half size. The leopard patent is very pretty, somewhere between abstract and realistic and I much prefer it to calf hair which creeps me out for some reason. I loved how the low cut/low vamp/naked look of them on my legs. The workmanship seems decent and I liked the leather lining.

I still think they are way too expensive and since my size is backordered until December I doubt they will go on sale soo. But don't despair. In Lord and Taylor and I saw about 100 versions of leopard pumps, kitten heels, flats and loafers from every possible brand, most around $100 a pair. Talbots have very cute black 2" kitten heels with leopard bow that come to $111 with September coupon.

    ReplyDelete
  67. So disappointed with the Teddie. I'm 5'11 and the dress is about 6 inches too short. Should have read "falls to upper thigh" not "falls above the knee"! I was thinking my tailor could take out the hem, but there isn't nearly enough fabric.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Can anyone help with the sizing on the Crystal Briolette Dress? It's the katie holmes one. There is an 8... I am a 6... but I have a large chest. Thinking it will work for me but welcoming any sizing help!

  70. @J.CrewJD: Try calling J.Crew :) They have the specific measurements for each article of clothing they carry. I called the other day for measurements on the Envelope Coat in a few different sizes since it looks like it runs big (it does)!

  71. Thanks, Alison! I've done that before but had forgotten about it. I did a chat with a CS rep, and found that the measurements on the size 8 make it a reallly small size 8. So, I ordered it. Hope it works out!
