J.Crew Email: Style notice: even more new arrivals, in stores & online

"Thanks!" to many of you, including Irina, who shared the following email from J.Crew this morning.

There are a few new arrivals for men (click here) & women (click here), and Crewcuts (click here).

I honestly did not catch that there were a few more additions on jcrew.com this morning. So I am off to check out what is new...

...Just took a look around and the Hacking Jacket in Double-Serge Wool (Item 51884; $250.00 ) is seriously AH-MAZ-ING! I want this jacket in all five shades. I am going to have to save up because the Fall & Winter Collections are going to be hard on my wallet. ;)

Well done, J.Crew. Well done.

Another beautiful new arrival is the Boat Blouse in Silk (Item 58742; $110.00). "Thanks!" to Sofia who was able to give us a great review of this top in her "The Boat Blouse in Silk" with several real life images. The post is worth checking out for anyone interested in the top.

Did you notice some new arrivals today? What items are you most excited about and why? :)

  2. OH MY GOSH. The new double serge hacking jacket has ENAMEL BUTTONS. I cannot believe my eyes. One in every color, please! I never thought they'd actually dummy up and bring back the Lexington including its amazing buttons... but they have. And it looks like they made them more generic to be more appealing to the masses which I like, rather than the nautical theme.

Bonus, it is the same price it was in 2007.

My only complaint is that it doesn't come in bright blue or pink... but I can deal, I suppose :)

  3. DYING for the new hacking jackets - I love the red on the model.

The holiday punch cashmere lined leather gloves are also gorgeous! I want...I need!!

Did anyone else notice that many of the new colors have to do with the holidays? Holiday punch, wreath, etc...

  4. JCrewJD: I just checked out that jacket too and it is seriously fabulous. I love love love it!!!

Josephine: Good catch on the colors and their names. They are so delicious!!! :)

  5. I don't think that there's a red hacking jacket being offered now - only the "heather bright berry" that's pictured. It does look red on Inguna Butane in the "Looks We Love" section, but I emailed CS when that came out a few weeks ago and they said that picture was the heather bright berry. Who knows... I'd love to see a red but I think this one is pretty, too. I've ordered it to see - will report back on the color and quality.

  6. Oooh, this jacket is dangerous! I may return my herringbone one and get this instead (sadly I don't think I can justify the cost of both). Maybe it's my monitor, but the berry looks different shades in different photos. Is it closer to red or dark pink?

    ReplyDelete
  7. Silver_lining: Thanks for point that out! It totally looks red in the looks we love, which is where I fell in love with it. I can't decide if it's red or pink, but I'm with you - I'll get it and then decide!

  8. Love the hacking jacket in red (pink?)!! I wonder how it compares to the decadent red schoolboy color? I can't wait for reviews on sizing...

  9. Silver_lining - do come back and review :) Did they tell you what 'heather bright berry' is...the colors are never as they seem (as we know) - I so wish there was an azalea (dumb me sold my NWT Azalea Lexington). Anyway, I don't wear primary colors and also not oranges...did they describe it all..pinkish? I am also wondering about the blue one - it looks like a Tiffany Blue online but who knows :) TIA

  10. I'm loving the new perfect shirt in solid colors! It is a cotton/silk blend which I could possibly looovee! Plus, the colors are beautiful. If there was free shipping or something like that, I would have definitely ordered one already.

Josephine...those gloves are gorgeous! And those colors make me crave the holidays! I love the boat blouse in "wreath".

    I'm a bit excited now...come on promo, J. Crew,...I want to shop! :)

  11. I saw the berry hacking jacket couple of weeks ago in my B&M. I would describe it like quite fluorescent red with pink tones (not orange). For me it was too bright but I have trouble wearing red in general. The fit is slim, I tried my regular blazer size 6 and it was a smidge too tight and I think I would size up to 8. For a comparison schoolboy in 6 fits me fine (actually too big and boxy) and the herringbone hacking blazer (in blue) was fine in 6 but a close fit.

  12. Oh, and the new Hutton wool pants are lined. Cass if you are reading they are for you :)
I like the Hutton fit in general and I thought they were very nice. They are very long, I am 5'6" with rather long legs but I would need hemming, even to wear with heels.

  13. The Maggie jacket in the heathered bright berry was quite bright and also looked red in the picture by itself. As a result, I would expect this one to be similar. If it is, ajc's description would be spot on. The shot on the model looks similar to the way my bright berry Maggie looked.

  14. SO happy to see the hacking jacket in the double serge with enamel buttons!! Love, love, love. Love that there are both brights and nice neutrals too. I think the berry jacket is going to be closer to a pink than a red. Hoping it's similar to the pink of the Maggie from several years ago.

  15. ajc -- Thanks for the color info. Wonder if it's going to be too bright.

  16. I contacted CS regarding the red mystery bag that's in a couple of the product pics, including the luxe sweatshirt. It's the Biennial Satchel, item 57107, in Red, available for preorder, apparently. It'll probably be on the site in a few weeks. Cute bag.

  17. silver_lining, do you have a link to that bag? TIA

  20. The new hacking jackets look amazing! Love both the cool pine and the bright berry...

  21. I think most of us are in agreement here that the double serge hacking jackets are TDF! I agree with JCrewJD - if they released one in a brighter blue, I would've been "ordered and done with" it already!

  22. I love the paisley perfect shirt and I am curious to see if the boat blouse in silk will work or just be to sheer for me

    ReplyDelete
  23. Agreed, the double serge hacking jacket is beautiful! I love the Turquoise color. . .hmm might be mine with the next rewards.

I also am loving the boat blouse in silk in the wreath color. What a great classic blouse!

Shoot . . .just when I think I'm done with fall/winter after caving and ordering my final "must-haves" on Monday.

    ReplyDelete
  24. ajc, thanks for the note. :) I was wondering about lining in the new pants...

I also picked up the hacking jacket in the bright berry. I'm so happy they put it out in the double serge fabric because the fabric they used in the first fall roll out was way to scratchy for me. Was wavering between the berry and the turquoise, but i figured the berry would go better with more shades of jeans/pants.

I also like the boat blouse in the wreath color, but will wait for markdown on that one.

  25. Anyone try on the
Etta dress? What did you think?

  26. The new hacking jacket appears to have the same issue as the herringbone version - the back vent is pulled open. This is a sign of poor tailoring and will put stress on the stitching at the top of the vent (you can even see it puckering in the model shot). The stress will make it prone to tearing or popping the stitches.

At least in the photos of the herringbone version the vent appears to be closed but we saw different in blogger IRL photos.

Maybe it's just a fluke but it is definitely not a sign of a quality jacket that is tailored to last.

  27. Good catch, xoxo. I recall that being discussed on JCA with the other version. Gah!

  30. The only items I added to my wishlist are men's clothes for my husband. I am headed to J.Crew in the mall tonight and will be checking to see if they have the flannel-lined Tompkins pant (unlikely) and the utility fleece hoodie (maybe). Both of these items would be great for my outdoorsy husband, headed into the Canadian fall/winter. I did not see a single must-have for myself.

  31. Yeeeeah, I'm gonna need that Hacking jacket in turquoise.

  32. AppGal -- lol, I thought of you when I saw it!

  33. Shekster, I saw the skirt today at the Collection store on Madison Avenue (NYC). I didn't check the sizes but they had quite a few of them, it is worth giving them a call tomorrow. HTH! Btw, they have a few schoolboy blazers and Teddies in decadent red if anyone is looking for those.

  35. For those of you who had been waiting, the Foundry Pant is on sale this morning for $89.99.

  36. What are the jeans the model is wearing in the Double Serge Hacking Jacket?

    Jean love!

  37. The way the vent is open on the hacking jacket on the model has more to do with fit and the way the model is standing than construction. Also, if you look at the overall jacket and sleeve length and the way the jacket is bunching around the armholes, it doesn't fit the model that well. It almost looks shrunken on her.

I tried on several hacking jackets in the herringbone and serge in my local B&M and all appeared to me well tailored overall. When I sized down to a 2 because my SA wanted to see it on me, it pulled the same way. A size 4 was perfect. Also, the jacket was a good length on me in the body and sleeve when I am usually between petite and regular size at only 5'4".

    ReplyDelete
  38. kitsmommy, the other hacking jacket did the same thing, even when some of the reviewers sized up. And it's really pulled open on this one, like it's 2-3 sizes too small! I wouldn't touch it myself.

  39. I'm not trying to be argumentative and I certainly complain about J Crew quality on many items.

However, there is a huge difference in poor tailoring (workmanship) or a cut being proportionally wrong in one area vs the cut being off for an individual's body type or a size being wrong. J Crew often does cut garments too slim through the hip for them to hang right and puts many sample garments on models for shoots that should be in talls or at least a size bigger.

I am pearish and often have vents pull due to the cut on jackets and my curvy booty. I tried a grey herringbone and a tipped serge in the black and neither pulled on me in my regular 4 at all even buttoned up. I have seen both jackets on my favorite SAs and they hung perfectly.

I ordered both the grey tipped and the bright berry and will reserve judgment on complaint on quality, sizing or cut until I have had an opportunty to to try them and check out my rear view. How this jacket hangs is going to be heavily dependent on where the garment hits.

  40. Thank you, xoxo & kitsmommy, for your informative posts about back vents on blazers. I'm straight up & down myself, but I hate it too when the back vent doesn't lay flat against my rear. I sometimes prefer ventless or cropped jackets to avoid that issue.

Looking forward to trying the new double serge hacking jacket - hopefully the petite size which I need won't present that back vent problem. Now, what would we all do without you & other great JCAs to give us head's up on fit & quality issues?!

  41. Thanks for the tip on the Foundry pant FFM! I just received them today and called for my price adjustment.

  42. kitsmommy, good luck with the jacket, I hope it works for you.

    ReplyDelete
  43. @XOXO and kitsmommy, I know a thing or two about tailoring and fitting garments. If the jacket were just too small you would see a lot more pulling and puckering around the vent to pull it that far open! The jacket may be too small on the model but the jacket panels and vent cannot be properly designed/cut/tailored so they lie flat on the back and also have this huge gap. Maybe it is photoshopped but if they are going to take out the wrinkles and pulling they would most likely fake the view of the vent as well. Since the other version had a similar issue, I would be very skeptical of this jacket. And saying how the model is standing to explain the gap, she is standing straight with her arms at her sides. That pose should not pull the vent open.

  44. totally obsessed with the boat blouse in the green and the perfect shirt in paisley

  45. LOL! Everyone is an expert on the internet.

I just hate to see anyone discount a great jacket that they haven't personally tried based on poor product pictures or reviews from people who may or may not have their exact body type. One reason I never loved the Lexington is that the double vents wouldn't sit right over my booty but many women love it.

Like I said, I generally have a hard time getting vents on any jacket to lie flat on me as I have 33-26-38 measurements and it is rare to get a good fit on the shoulders and still have enough fabric not to pull at the bottom. So far this jacket has been a winner when I have tried it, even buttoned and moving around. And I am super picky about fit.

Sorry, but I think this specific jacket's overall problem with fit is that it is too small on this model and too short in the body. Look at the side view with it buttoned. The bulge above the model's bust wouldn't be there if the jacket had enough fabric around and if the top button were fastening the right place. Ditto for the wrinkles around the bottom of the armhole. Note that the jacket sits above the model's natural waist and is a good two inches short in the sleeves. Add a too small and regular (non tall sized) jacket to two layers and nothing is going to hang right even on the slim model. The jacket has no ease.

Also, I don't think the model is standing straight at all. Her shoulders and hips are not square, and she is looking enough to the side to twist her torso. Considering the fact that the jacket is already tight, just jutting out a hip a tiny bit will strain the jacket.

Anyway, I would just encourage anyone interested in the jacket to at least try it. If if works, great, if not, move on to the next thing. Don't judge the cut and workmanship of a garment based only on a photo of a sample garment or a picture of a blogger who isn't your body double.

  46. Hi Ema, THANKS SO MUCH! I was able to get one from that store! I REALLY appreciate you letting me know!

  47. @kitsmommmy, I'm sure anyone interested in the new hacking jacket, and that seems to be quite a few people, will definitely check it out themselves. I know I will but I appreciate the heads up to use the 3-way mirror and check out the back and how the vent looks. I don't always use the 3-way but I will definitely for this item and that is good to know.
