J.Crew of Season's Past: {a look in the closet}

It's that time again, to take a look at an image of J.Crew pieces from seasons past! As caribbelle (in this post) so beautifully termed, "ye olde j crew of yore".

This little number is the Veruschka Dress (Item 91142; $335.00) from 2008. Now this is the kind of print that you either love-to-love or love-to-hate. I fall in the first category.

J.Crew shared that the dress was "inspired by an iconic decade of glamorous bohemians". Glamorous indeed! Moreover, they "asked an artist to create a spectacular custom-print for this silk-twill boatneck dress—and aligned it at the hem for extra drama". Nice!

I adore the intricate print. (I think it is one of J.Crew's top ten best prints of all time.) I also love the style of the dress- from the boat-neck, to three-quarter sleeves, to its hidden pockets. Perfection in my book!

What are your thoughts on the look(s)/item(s) from the past? Do you find the look(s)/item(s) classic or do you think they are dated?

  1. I absolutely adore this print! I think it looks timeless and classic! I would buy this dress today if it were for sale....I love seeing the J. Crew of yesteryear!

  2. Sigh. I remember this dress from the February 2008 catalogue. J.Crew could reissue everything from this rollout, and I would do some serious bank account damage.

  3. I am in the LOVE camp. It's timeless.

  4. I love it too. It's funny though, on the front shot model wearing Santorini flats, but in the back shot she is wearing Mila stacked heels. As if they could not decide

  5. For me, this was definitely the dress that got away! I remember it selling out at full price in my local stores. Sadly, as a petite 0, the dress (which only came in regular sizes) was a touch too long :(

  6. Would totally buy this today...it's perfection.

  7. Yey! I am happy to hear that this dress is a love-to-love for so many of you!!! It really is an amazing print. :)

Slastena, I did not even catch that she is wearing two different pairs of shoes (one for each image). Good eye!

  8. Ohhhh! Cruel! So cruel to show us this extinct specimen! This is the one item I've basically given up on ever finding in my size. *weeps*

  9. I know this cut would never work on me, but wow is it ever glam! Love it.

I have to say, I've been surprised to see the prices of some of the pieces you've featured, Alexis. $335 seems expensive to me today for JC, yet is along the lines of JC's current pricing.

  10. To my eyes this looks awful. I know I'm in the minority but the color scheme appears quite harsh. Garish is one word that comes to mind when I look at this dress. Rorschach is another.

  11. Sorry...another nay on this one...looks to much like a carpet to me.

  12. I die! This dress is amazing. I would buy this in a heartbeat today, beautiful classic print.

  13. Simple sophistication.
    Thanks, Alexis!
The dress doesn't work for my short self. I would appear to be more of a misfitted matryoshka doll than graceful lady.

Would love to see other JCAs' blog pics...has anyone posted this as an OOTD before?

  14. I feel like shopwithm posted the dress as an OOTD at one point on her blog.

  15. Yes, shopwithm posted pics of it... it looks awesome on her! Here is the link.

  16. I'm in the love camp too. Maybe I have a little hippy in me growing up in Santa Cruz though. It is not for the conservative.

  17. Looks much better on m than on the model.

  18. lol, my heart is weeping. I love this dress so much and wanted it sooo badly.

  19. I love this dress and I'm so sad I didn't get it when it was available. I miss the old J.Crew so much!

  20. I'm weeping right along with you Elaine :)
Couldn't help but snicker at Xoxo's Rorschach description for I saw the same thing in the pattern.

  21. This dress almost never shows on up eBay, either. Believe me... I stalk.

  22. Love the dress. Furthermore, I love that the model isn't a stick.

  23. When I look at this dress I realize what a bunch of baloney is currently being served to us now, courtesy of MD, Jenna, et al.

  24. I've been desperately trying to score this dress for ages. I throw it out there on the JCA looking for exchange every week. ****sighhhhh***

  25. This was the first-full-price-buy-it-as-quick-as-I- can purchase I ever made. Every Spring, "she" makes her appearance - I love this dress and treat it VERY carefully!

  26. This dress look great on M (like everything), but personally, I would feel very self conscious in it, it is such a bold, memorable pattern. I feel it would 'wear me' instead of me wearing it. Maybe you just need bolder personality to pull it off :)

  27. It's not my style, but I appreciate the work. Look at how the print clearly works with the lines of the dress! Quality, quality, quality.

Alexis, I would love to see a run-down of your top ten j.crew prints of all time.

    :) Jen

  28. I love and own this dress. I bought it for my rehearsal dinner for my may 2008 wedding. I wish I had bought more from this j crew "era."

  29. I would wear the print as a scarf. Not a dress. Totally agree with xoxo, it's garish and way too loud. And (I mentioned this before with the Prabal Gurung top that was some $500), it's SO memorable. It looks like a bag on her.

Agree with MegCrew--love that the model isn't a stick.

  30. @J.CrewJD: thanks! kudos on starting your blog!

  31. Timeless! J Crew Prints & silhouettes are always top notch in my book! :-)

  32. Thanks J.CrewJD for the linky & xoxo for the compliment! It's a really gorgeous dress. It definitely is a major look and not for everyone, and I can't wear it every day, but it always feels special. I always get a ton of compliments on it when I wear it and it makes me feel happy. :)

  33. This dress is beautiful. Based on what it looks like, however, I think it would fail what I call the "hug test" on me- my arms wouldn't properly close in a hug because the shoulders are too wide. :(

  34. Maybe this is a good place to post this? Someone on ebay is selling the colorblocked Penelope peep toes & Petra heels in size 11. These older shoes seem to fit me better than newer ones and I was wondering if anyone had opinions about these shoes. They have been barely worn. Here is a link to one pair, she's only selling these 2 pair so you can easily see the other:

@J.CrewJD, if you have any of these I'd love to hear esp. since you have some Penelopes in your avi!
    Thanks!

  35. Hi Marisa! I own the Penelope peep toes in all three colors (they are my all tiem favorite shoe), and I actually bought a pair of Juliet heels from this seller a couple months ago. I have no idea why her Penelopes haven't sold yet!

I think the Penelope peep toes are really comfortable for J.Crew shoes. I can wear them all day without pain. They fit very well and don't pinch or rub. I also have the Petras which aren't quite as comfy as the Penelopes, but aren't bad for heels. I wear the Petras alot in the summer. I hope that is helpful!

  36. What about her color combo for the Penelopes?

  37. Wow loved it on M. I couldn't pull it off. I think the dress on the model is too big. The two round flowers on her chest would be in a very awkward position if she put her arms down. I wish Jenna et al would stop copying other designers and do more original pieces like this. JC is soooooo boring to me right now.

  38. This is a Classic piece!! saw it and was wishing it was a new item i could order :)
