J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Extra 30% off Sale, code SHOPNOW, ends Friday midnight. Hope there's a restock during the week. Selection is looking mighty tired.

  2. Does anyone own the Downtown Field Jacket? I tried it on and quite liked it, but if you actually own it, do you feel it's worth the money?

  3. Off topic, but the Tillary tote is expected to ship 5.21.2012. I can just imagine the surprise you'd get opening a box you had ordered over three months ago.

  4. As anyone reviewed the Mona maryjane pumps? They are on sale now plus 30% off. Really love them are they comfortable? Please help thanks.

  5. Just like to say that I see now what all the fuss is about when it comes to the No.2 pencil skirt in double serge wool. I had been resisting because pencil skirt just didn't seem to scream Me! but alas I gave in and tried it. What an amazingly flattering skirt. I must have one in every (bright) color there is now.

  7. I reviewed the Madelene dress and the Clea dress, as well as some other random items I found at my B&M including:

    fanfare cardi
    merino tatted sweater
    jules dress in ashbury floral
gimlet skirt in coaster stripe (how is this sold out already!?)

  8. Happy Valentine's Day! I agree about the number 2 pencil skirts. I wish they came in more muted colors.

  9. Can someone tell me about the quality of this year's Miller boots? I've heard the quality of J Crew boots has been declining. How is the leather? I saw a pair of Vera Wang Lavender ankle sale boots for under $100, but I've never tried her boots either so who knows. I saw the Miller boots on EBay and JC's site. Debating between the two.
    Thank you.

  10. Has anyone tried the Director dress in bi-stretch wool? Is the neckline really low? Is it itchy? I'd appreciate any details.

  11. I just received the Trudy peacoat in Lemon Twist and love it! It is a true bright yellow gold like a sunflower (no mustard undertones but not lemony like it looks on my screen.)
I ordered a 10 and a 12 because I vary between the two depending on the cut of the jacket, and the 10 fits perfect. It is beautifully made with nice details like the gold chain to hang it, back vent, just the right length (low hip), and no scratchy threads in the sleeves.
I'm going to France in April and think it will be perfect with navy!

  12. I received my Clea dress last week, which is on sale with the extra 30% off. The fabric is thick and the dress seems well-made. It's perfect for those of us with curvy shapes. FYI, the Vermont Pine color is more of a muted teal than true pine green, but it's a lovely color.

  13. Has anyone tried the Emmaleigh dress in Super 120s? I love the fact that it is sleeveless and the colors are great.

  14. cmg, I have the Miller boots and they are great. I sized down and they do scuff a bit but that is fine for the style.

My one nit with them is that the back seam at the top where the leather is sewn together has a rough bit that scratches a bit. I am planning on putting a little piece of moleskin over it. It scratched my tights up a bit and is just noticeable enough. I'm not sure if that would be true of all pairs or just mine. I classify that under the easily fixed category but not sure if that's a deal breaker to you or not. They are otherwise super comfy!

    Hope that helps

  15. Tried on the Jaspe Pullover in store - looks much nicer in person than online. The heather indigo is and interesting color( a bit more teal than denim blue) and the shirt is a nice medium weight and good for layering for early Spring. Fits TTS.

  16. Factory sailor sweater in black/linen. The 'linen' color really is an overwhelming tan color, not really white or cream like it photographed. I returned it today at my local crewlet and got instead the Factory cotton pencil skirt in the yellow (read as: chartreuse) color. Style # 37415. Has pockets, no belt loops. Had to size down from my usual at the waist skirt size. The material is very nice. Looks fantastic with navy or black. None of the other merch looked very interesting.

  17. XOXO, my Director dress will arrive later this week, so I'll post a review in next week's thread. I am pretty sure it is going to be too low in the neck. I have the Banquette (similar cut) dress in black, so filling in the gap with a cami is unobtrusive, but I think that won't work the dahlia Director. We'll see.

  18. Reviews of the Stripe Sweater Skirt and Factory double-serge pencil skirt (with link so you can buy it with the 30% off promo), as well as thoughts on the Heartthrob shirt HERE.

  19. Hexicon, thank you! I know what you mean about the Banquette. I have it in two colors and the pinstripe and it always needs a scarf or cami to fill in the neckline. It might be more difficult with the dahlia director but if that's the only issue then I will probably go for it and find a way. My biggest concern is that the wool will be itchy or that the sleeves will be unlined.

    Can't wait for your review!

  20. InboxImpulse - the Emmaleigh is a favourite of mine, it is so incredibly flattering. I wear my normal suiting dress size and the fit is perfect. Highly recommend!

Let me know if you have any specific questions.

  21. Phoebe - I own the downtown field jacket. I got it on super sale when it wasn't selling in 2009. Interesting the one that's currently available is still the same style #. You can see the jacket in this post and links to 8 other blogger irl pics. I got XS because it fit very well, but I wish I had gotten a S, which is the size I take most often in J Crew. The issue is the sleeves are too small for me in the XS to accommodate layers. I struggle to get the arms in, but once I'm in it's ok. You can also layer over with a scarf. I think it's a great small, lightweight jacket that provides some wind/chill protection. If I were going on vacation I'd definitely take it as a layering option. HTH

  22. I got the high waisted denim pencil skirt in the mail yesterday. I am a 2 in the no. 2 double serge wool so went for a 26 in the denim skirt. I definitely could have gone up a size. The 26 fits, but is a little more body con than I would like.

The color is nice - maybe a little darker than I was expecting from the photo, which I consider a plus. It's also a consistent color. The way the light shines on it in the online photo made me wonder if it had some lighter patches, but it doesn't.

The fabric has some stretch to it, which makes it comfortable, and easier to squeeze into, even if it's a little small.

It tapers much more at the bottom than the no. 2 pencil skirt, but you can sort of tell that from the photo.

I agree with others that it's a flattering skirt.

My one beef with it is that I like to wear my pencil skirts high on my waist. This one is very long, so I think it's better worn high. However, when I do that, the pockets on the back look funny because they're up too high. Or maybe it's just my large rear that's the problem :-)

I still like the skirt though, and will most likely keep it.

I also received the honeycomb cable sweater in heather acorn. I *love* the color and it's a nice sweater for the sale price. I had bought the bright poppy in a S on final sale earlier thinking a size up would be okay since it was a fitted sweater. This was a mistake, the XS heather acorn fits much better.

  23. I was pleasantly surprised by my Super 120s 1035 trouser (called the "Gemma" trouser on the packaging) - I got it during one of the promos with 8% cashback from ebates...wasn't thrilled about the fact that they were not lined because I have very sensitive skin. I gave them a try because I have the matching suit jacket and skirt and they are lovely - nice drape, not itchy, and keeps its shape.Hasn't pilled yet but I only wore it once. Took my regular size and it was more fitted in the thigh than other pants but this is my first pair from the crew.

  24. Today, I'm wearing a heritage green perfect-fit T-shirt under my suit. Cool greens work very well for me.

I was going to get a light citron T-shirt, but IRL it looked more yellow than chartreuse, and I took a pass.

Also, I have an elastic bracelet w/hot pink beads and crystals. The crystals give off an aurora borealis look outside.

Finally, I have the frog bracelet on back order in daiquiri ice. Hopefully it arrives by early April.

  25. JCrewJD, thanks for the review on the Madeline. I love it, and it looks so good on you! I don't think I've got the occasion or lifestyle to wear it, but I am thinking... :)

  26. Thanks Clicquot :) Not sure where I'd wear it either but I must have it anyway!

  30. So I noticed this morning that the Fresco Floral dress has (already) been shuffled to FS. Has anyone seen this IRL?

  31. JCrew Matinee Trench Item 36326
Careful with this one; alot of stitching hanging loose, and actually some loops of stitching hanging out from collar on the one I received. This is consistent with the quality of the khaki colored Matinee I tried in the fall. Stitching had run from the interior lining through to the outside of the jacket sleeve, where there wasn't a seam.

    JCrew Trudy Peacoat Item 67590
Sleeves run super tight. I haven't been commenting on fit since I had gained weight but these sleeves are abnormally tight in the upper arm, and the arm holes are either too small, sewn on a weird angle or up too high. So tight I couldn't lift my arms very high, just barely able to adjust back of collar. Loose threads have visibly been snipped at one of the pockets; again check seams carefully on this item. Sleeves hit at wrist bone. Buttons placed as shown in picture. This will be very cute on if you fit in it.

    JCrew Double-breasted gold-button blazer Item 71042
Runs big chest, body and across shoulders (seams land past edge of my shoulder). Arm holes are cut big, sleeves comfortably accomodate shirt sleeves. Not sure how this will change when sizing down. Liked enough on, even though it was so big, to try a size down. Modeled picture is true to life.

Loving the metal buttons they're using on some of the perfect shirts, ringspun tee & now this jacket.

  32. Has anyone tried or reviewed the Joni jean (60481)? They are final sale already (which maybe is my answer already), so I don't want to pull the trigger without some feedback. I loved how they were styled in store. Thanks!
