"Looking to VENT" with J.Crew

This is the weekly "Looking to VENT with J.Crew" post, a place to share our not-so-stellar experiences with J.Crew.

If you have recently experienced a frustrating situation with J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including poor experiences with purchases & orders, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. The sunflower bracelet in pearl is really cute, but the "pearls" look a little too plasticky and I'm paranoid that they're going to fall out at any moment.

  2. This one's too long for a hai-crew, unfortunately.

    It's annoying that the shoes don't ship from the warehouse in their original product boxes. All the shoes I've recvd are in the larger, generic brown shoe boxes. Many pair have unremovable marks or scuffs of some sort on them. It makes me think they are sitting on a shelf and boxed when it's time for shipment. Whatever they're doing, I don't like it.

    1. I hate that, too! It makes me feel like they might be used or returns, which I hate. Almost as bad as receiving an item with no tag attached.

  3. Boooooo on my last order for quite some time being a bomb. :(

    My red schoolboy wool blazer arrived yesterday and I love it, it fits perfectly ... but there's a blemish on one sleeve. A small dark spot. It's not THAT noticeable but still.

    Can't return/exchange it because of course they are all sold out now. It definitely was not a return, even the (cheapish, lightweight) buttons were still wrapped in tissue. So not sure what happened but it still cost nearly $100 and I'm mad that it has a spot on it. :(

    Also a rant that the Natasha blouse was pictured on the website in a really brilliant blue color swatch, Matisse blue ...? Yeah, well IRL it's more like Nightfall Blue. Quite dark. And I would not have ordered it if I had known that. GRRRRRR.

    Finally, I ordered the Factory maxi-check shirt in the blue colorway because I have the retail one in pink ... the Factory one is white and blue instead off-white and blue, and it's made in a different fabric. Do NOT want. :( Again I would not have ordered it had I known that. At least I can return it because it wasn't FS and my order would still total over $100 w/o it, so they won't ding me for the shipping cost retroactively, right?

    GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR. This has put in me in a foul mood today!

    1. Do you have an online PS? If so, I would email/call them and ask that your blazer be discounted even further. I remember I once received a double-serge wool pencil skirt in black (that I received on final sale with additional % off) and it arrived with hair all over it (what looked like both human and cat hair--blech!) I emailed my PS and she applied an additional 20% off my order, which was worth it for me to keep. Worth a shot!

  4. I'm irritated with my last order too. I bought the Silk Tie Top in black, and it is completely see through! I bought it to wear to work with pencil skirts, but considering you can see my entire bra through the fabric, I don't think so. This is not a shirt that would look good with a cami under it. Even at $20, I paid way too much for this piece of junk.

    I also bought the Painter Cardigan in neon persimmon. Stupid me, I should've been tipped off by the word NEON in the color name, but on my computer screen, this looked like a deep pinky/peach. Boo. Another waste of $20. No way I'd ever wear this color in public.

    Has anyone had any lucky trying to return final sale items to a B&M store?

  5. I have returned both defective items and items where the color wasn't represented accurately, without any issues. I would definitely give it a shot!

  6. I ordered the Gingham retro-bandeau tank in my usual swimsuit size 8 during the 20% off promo. I love the look of it,but wasn't 100% sure of the fit. It felt a little long, which was surprising since I have a rather long torso. I decided this weekend that I should try the 6. I couldn't see the suit online, and was surprised to find it in the Final Sale section. The price was lower, BUT it was FS and I wasn't convinced that the 6 would fit.

    Nevermind, because the on-line only suit is already sold out in sizes below an 8.

  7. Elaine, If it makes you feel any better I have had a small black on the sleeve of jackets from JC before...I reordered a second one and it had the same problem! Also had black MARKS (yes plural) on a very expensive collection blouse that I did end up keeping b/c I wanted it and they were all sold out.

      I'm gonna just bite the bullet and keep it, but just knowing it's there is going to bug me. I guess it's sort of like getting that first little scratch on your brand-new car.

  8. I've been annoyed lately with their sizing. The Medium is HUGE and then the small fits but all of them ride up giving the appearance of a beer belly!

    I also went into the store the other day and the sales girl was extremely annoyed that I asked her to check if they had anymore sizes out back. Isn't that your job?

  9. I bought the herringbone Minnie pant on FS online, and when it arrived, not only did not have a tag, but I could see faint spots on the front! To me, it clearly looked like a used return!! Luckily, JCrew accepts returns even on final sale items when there is a problem, but I was very disappointed to see that Jcrew accepts returns of used items and tries to sell them again.

  10. I ordered a few factory items last month, and then a week later another package showed up on my doorstep containing a shirt that I had never seen before in my life and had not ordered. It's a $30 striped v-neck shirt that I didn't find appealing and would never consider paying $30 for. I do not understand at all how it wound up in my shopping cart, got submitted along with my order and got charged to my credit card.

    CS was good about it though and of course allowed me to return it without charging me. They also didn't charge me for the other factory stuff I sent back.

    I was (and am still) freaked out about this. Check and double-check your credit card statements!

  11. A few weeks ago I ordered some super cute flip flops from the Crewcuts line - they are navy/white striped on the bottom and kelly green on the top. Anyway, thanks to the crazy warm weather, I was able to wear them this weekend. After 2 days of light wear, I noticed that the stripes were peeling off! Apparently, the white stripes are just some sort of tape. And, for me, it's just not worth the hassle of boxing them up, driving to the post office, and mailing them back, for a $15 refund. Ugh!

  12. I ordered the FS Dorrie skirt in Alabaster. Online it's described as 100% cotton, machine washable. But when it arrived yesterday it was Rayon/ Linen and dry clean only. It's cute but I don't like everyday summer clothes that are dry clean only. Going back today.

  13. I'm so frustrated with the quality of items lately!

    I love the vintage cotton tees, so have ordered a bunch -- short sleeve, long sleeve, and v neck, and EVERY SINGLE ONE has developed a whole or unraveled seams within a few wearings.

    I love JC, but this is crazy. I've bought about 90% of my wardrobe here for the past decade, but I'm seriously thinking about taking my shopping dollars elsewhere.

    What's the point of paying a premium for clothes that fall apart?

  15. I am totally frustrated over two issues. These emails that I see here on JCA I am not always getting and some of the others come late, especially the sale emails. Sure wait until all the sizes and styles are running low...
    Also, stop sending me "Your J.Crew order has shipped" if all you have done is create a shipping label and after 3 days there is still no tracking information. Guess their order processing system, spits out that automatic email when they put a label on the box but not when they actually ship the box out the door. Very frustating, that adds a delay to orders that already take way too long to receive. I live in Colorado not Alaska.

  16. I ordered online from last week's 20% sale promo, the Lillian Dress in garden shade. I liked it because of the little ruffle pleats above the shoulders (if you zoom in, you can see it). So I received it yesterday, the pleats weren't there! WT???? Totally misleading. I started worrying because disclaimer on the promo-Final Sale, no returns or exchanges. The good news, I have a friend at the SF J.Crew store that'll accept my return.

  17. I purchased the Cafe Capri wool in Baked Citron and wore them for the first time today. Unfortunately, on the way to work I noticed the seam on the entire right leg was incomplete and wide open! I nearly died and didn't know what to do. I managed to come up with a tiny hotel style sewing kit with a yellow thread that didn't come close to matching and did the best stitch job I could just to get through the day. I nearly cried sitting on the toilet with my pants in my lap sewing away and it was barely 7 am. Thanks a lot J. Crew.

  18. I just purchased the bubble necklace and got my package today. I know this necklace is not one of their most expensive necklaces, but the least they could have done would have been to ship it in a JC jewelry box. Instead, it came in bubble wrap and a plastic bag.

  19. The bright white background on the J.Crew website makes it nearly impossible to see the details on any of their white items, especially the wedding gowns. I used to work in a bridal shop, and it's hard enough to get a bride to order her gown out of a catalog, let alone when she can't even see the shape of the dress! If J.Crew is serious about selling bridal, they need to get some background contrast going on.

  20. That's a big pet peeve of mine, too, Gigi. I ordered a total of four pairs of Quoddy boots this past winter. The first pair arrived in a Quoddy box with Quoddy tags and a Quoddy storage bag, as they should. The next three pairs were all in generic, unmarked J.Crew boxes with no tags or storage bags. Two of the three pairs were not even the size I ordered. What happened to the original tags, boxes and storage bags? How could these things get "lost" in the warehouse? If they were returns, why would J.Crew accept the return without the tags, box and storage bag and why would they think it's ok to sell these items to another customer as new?

  21. Jeanne & Gigi - me too! Drives me crazy to spend lots o money on J Crew shoes and they are shipped in the flimsy brown box! I have bought full priced and sale J Crew shoes and most of the time, I get the brown box :( For the cost of JC shoes, we deserve the pretty box to go with them.
