"Looking to VENT" with J.Crew

This is the weekly "Looking to VENT with J.Crew" post, a place to share our not-so-stellar experiences with J.Crew.

If you have recently experienced a frustrating situation with J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including poor experiences with purchases & orders, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. Eh, not a real vent but there are three items in my shopping cart that I am ready to pull the trigger on but they are full price. I am holding my breath to see if we get a % off promo sometime soon before my items are magically unavailable.

  2. Final Sale--Please please go away--never come back again--little Genny wants to shop:0

  3. The code SHOPNOW works for 30% off sale items. I just placed an order on a bunch of new sale items this morning that are not final sale. Not sure what's going on with all these secret sale codes lately.

    3. lizzi43: Those items are the promo-priced items, and they will either go back up to full-price or move to final sale in the next couple of weeks. Then different items on the website will be promo-priced. I have the majority of them listed here on my blog, and I just updated the list this morning with the newest additions.

  4. OH HELL. Of course I placed an order for some popbacks this morning. Grrrrrrrr. LOL

  5. I just ordered some non-sale factory items and used SHOPNOW code and it worked too!

  6. Erika, how did you access factory items mid-week?

  8. Thanks!

How do factory sizes run? The tees seem to run from xs to xlg. If I usually take a small in regular J.Crew tees, would I be a medium in Factory?

    1. SE Mom, everything I get at Factory I get in my regular retail size (including tees) and it all fits fine. For me, it seems to run pretty tts.

  9. Thank you to whoever found and shared the SHOPNOW code! Just bought the Polka Dot Popover and Spindrift Sweatshirt in Navy!

  10. I received the Pop art Polka Dot pencil skirt last week. It was already coming apart at the seam. I spotted it while it was still in the bag. When I called CS they said it was too bad, but I could return it. So I drove to the store and they said they would send it out for repair if I wanted. Erm, shouldn't new items arrive in pristine condition? For a $128 skirt I expected better.

  11. Are stores offering an extra 30% off sale also? I'm so mad that I'm not getting these emails. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

    1. It wasn't an email. It was listed as a coupon via my Ebates account page.

    2. I went to the b&m store to check it out today. No extra percent off and clearance was not final sale. I tried on some things to order online cause the price was cheaper online plus I got an extra 30 off!

  13. I think this email will explain my vent:

    Hello,

I placed order ######### on 4/5/12 and I found the code SHOPNOW for additional 30% off final sale merchandise today. Since it is within 7 days of my order date, may I please have a price adjustment for the 4 final sale items I ordered? Thank you.

    Hello ******,
Thanks for reaching out - I'm happy to address your request.
Promotional discounts are not applicable to previously placed orders. With apologies, we are unable to accommodate your request today.
If there is anything further I can do to assist you, please feel free to contact me.
    Best,
    Sharon

You know, it would have been a 19$ credit to me, but they will lose much more business than that from me now. Boo!

  14. I would recommend the polka dot popover at the current price, it is much better deal than similar items from other brands, goes with everything and it is not final sale. I reviewed it HERE

  15. A small vent: I'll often wait for something to go on sale, but apparently everyone else does too, and then I miss out-- The Polly Popover went on sale (today?) and they're already sold out of every size except 2 and 0. Maybe a B&M will still have it..?

  16. The promo code now shows up on my "Ebates Coupons you make like."

Here is the text: Now through Friday, enjoy an additional 30% off sale items. Use code: SHOPNOW (Exp. 04/13/2012)

  17. Frustrated that now they are not applying 15% teacher or student discount on phone orders of full price items through the store. The SA told me yesterday that they have stopped honoring the discount, now it is only for in store purchase of full price items !! So many inconsistencies ...also they refused to honor online price for some items which were not marked down in the store...I think it is best to stay away from J.Crew for sometime :)

    1. Hmmm. I placed two orders via in-store phone and my SA told them I was a teacher, and the 15% came off. J CREW!! THIS IS SO STUPID! Be consistent and stop making everyone angry please.

  18. Apparently I need to learn my JC colors a little better...I ordered a pair of the factory ballet flats during the OURTREAT secret promo last week in "gallery green" which if you look on the flats on the factory site looks like kelly green. I received the shoes today and I see that gallery green is actually aqua...nothing like the photo on the factory site but they are accurately depicted on the retail site as aqua. They're not a bad color...just not what I thought I was ordering. I also purchased the dream striped sweater tee which appeared to be black and white striped online and is actually black and light grey striped so I'm a bit disappointed about the inaccurate photo depiction on that as well.

  19. Love their jewelry, but almost all of it breaks within two months...then they charge YOU to repair it! Grr......

  20. Somewhat OT: Why are the Valentina printed patent pumps in leopard print so cheap right now? Is there something wrong with them? Not comfortable? I'm a little skeptical, but they seem to be such a great deal. I don't want to get burned on final sale.

  21. I can't believe the terrible customer service lately. I tracked my recent shipment of returns that arrived at J.Crew on Monday. Yesterday I called CS to ask them to refund the paypal purchased items to my credit card as last time they sent me gift cards so I assumed there was a problem and I did not want more gift cards.

There were 5 items from 3 different orders that were placed using paypal as well as a few other items purchased using my credit card and not through paypal. Since the returns had not been processed yet, CS patiently went through all the details with me and put notes on my account. Today I get the "return arrived" email and when I check, they are ALL refunded to paypal, even the ones that had been placed directly with my credit card! Total screw-up!

  22. AppGal I have no idea; I picked up a second pair myself this morning as well as a pair of the peeptoe Dreas in the same print. Most ppl size up by a 1/2 size because they can be a smidge tight, but other than that I have no idea why they've survived on sale this long. Maybe they just figure no one wears closed-toe, non-casual shoes in the summer? :P

  23. What is the deal with the secret % off codes? Thank you to whoever posted the "Shopnow" code earlier. I went a head and placed an order for a pair of white factory 5" chino shorts, a factory perfect-fit short sleeve striped tee, and the factory Bronwyn canvas hobo and received 30% off those items' sale price which turned out to be a great deal! I also ordered two pair of Cece leather ballet flats in Tawny Sand and Burnt Sienna for full price. I only plan to keep one pair but I want to see them in person first. I have this weird feeling J.Crew didn't know that code was working. Hopefully no one's orders are cancelled. You just never know.

Does anyone have the Factory canvas Bronwyn hobo? It looks pretty light in color but for $33 I thought it would be a great kick around bag for the summer and early fall.

  24. Placed an order last Thurs and the 30% promo started Fri. I called Fri morning and inquired about possible applying the discount to the 2 orders I placed the day before. Nope, cannot be applied to previous orders. I understand if the orders were placed a while ago but it was less than 24 hours ago and they have not been shipped yet. I asked if the orders could be cancelled and I place a new order. Nope, cannot be done either. No other options offered. Guess won't be buying that much from such poor customer service oriented company anymore.

  25. AppGal -- I looove the patent printed Valentinas! They are adorable and super comfortable. You'll love them. I sized up to my usual 9 at JC and wore them an entire day running around and they were perfect. I can't believe they've lasted this long. I'm hoping the black/grey pop back in my size.

  26. The price cuts are stupid in some cases. I convinced myself I was happy paying X price for a few things and it's irritating to see them go down before I've even recvd them. They're final sale, so no price adjustment unless I promise my 2nd born. Then maaaaybe.

Items are being marked down two weeks in a row while others have been languishing for weeks, months in some cases, with no price cuts. Who is falling asleep w/the price gun in hand?

    1. I agree with you 100%, Gigi! Why no price adjustments? At least give store credit. I know when I make returns I always end up spending even more money. The final sale stuff is ridiculous too. If it is $6.99, OK, final sale. But $89.99 shirts that have been out only three weeks & then straight to final sale? I don't know any other retailers that do this.

  27. I just tried to buy a bracelet and necklace for my 5 year-old daughter. They were on final sale and was advertised with Free Shipping, so I thought, "Perfect!"
As my daughter stood next to my computer and picked out her colors, I tried to place the order and received an error message stating that JCrew cannot deliver these items to my state (Illinois). WTF?????
so I get on an instant chat with a specialist and she was absolutely no help whatsoever. This is our conversation below:

Thank you for shopping J.Crew--a specialist will be with you shortly.
You are now chatting with Sara.
    Jennifer: Jennifer
Jennifer: hi, I'm trying to order a necklace and bracelet for my daughter and I just got this message:
Jennifer: Product (19625) cannot be shipped to this state (Illinois). Product (63859) cannot be shipped to this state (Illinois).
    Sara: Hello!
Sara: This item is not able to be shipped to your state due to a state law or regulation if you see this message.
Sara: I am very sorry for the inconvenience.
Jennifer: I don't understand. Please let your manager know that this is ridiculous. I've been shopping on this website for many years and have never come across this before. It's a very disappointing shopping experience
Sara: It does not have to do with us, it is a state law or regulation regarding the material that was used to make this bracelet.
Sara: I am very sorry about this.
Jennifer: I will be sure to write a letter to the head of Jcrew and notify all the top Jcrew bloggers about this ridiculous and ludicrous situation. Maybe Jcrew should not be doing business with such shady clients. Please pass this on to your manager. Thank you

I've never heard of anything so stupid before in my life, seriously. What is the jewelry made of? an illegal substance?
So I thought I was getting a great deal and making my daugher happy, but now Jcrew has 2 incredibly sad and unhappy customers. I am so out of love and disillusioned by this company that I am going to cancel my Jcrew card (something I've been meaning to do anyway)
Have you ladies ever heard of anything like this before?

    1. Actually KC, they're right about it not being them. Certain states bar companies from selling items they deem harmful depending on what it contains. California is notorious for having stiff regulations on baby and childrens' products. Wish my state (NY) was more like them in that context.

I'm thinking with the jewelry that you described, that it could be the lead content (different states= different acceptable lead levels). Frustrating, I know. That said, J. Crew, as a national and now multi-national company shouldn't be selling items that they cannot sell in certain states or countries. IMO, there just being cheap and apathetic.

  28. Yes it is not jcrews fault about the jewelry it is the state of illinois. So please give them a break here:-)I lived in illinois for several years and had to have several items sent to friends in another state and then sent to my daughter
