J.CREW AND THE MAN WHO DRESSED AMERICA

With more than 300 stores, nearly two billion dollars in sales, and even the first lady as a fan, J.Crew has become a fashion force. CNBC anchor David Faber tells the story of this growing retailer and explains what’s made this stylish, contemporary brand a success. From New York to Italy, CNBC goes inside the months-long process of conceiving, creating, and marketing a new line of clothing.

J.Crew is led by CEO Millard “Mickey” Drexler, known in the fashion world as “The King of Retail” for his intuitive sense of what the public craves and for his ability to lift troubled companies to new heights. When he joined the Gap, the company was taking in roughly 400 million dollars a year; within several years he turned it into a retail giant worth $14 billion. The Bronx-born Drexler is known for his obsessive focus on detail, unflinching candor, and trusting his instincts over market research. In an interview with CNBC, Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour says, “Fashion can’t ever stand still. And that’s why Mickey is so brilliant at it.”

How will J. Crew and Drexler meet the twin challenges of expansion and a rapidly changing landscape in the Internet age of retail? Find out in the CNBC original documentary, “J.Crew and the Man Who Dressed America,” premiering on CNBC on May 24th at 10PM ET/PT.
For the times/dates this show will air:
Thursday, 5/24/2012 - 10:00 PM
Thursday, 5/24/2012 - 1:00 AM

Sunday, 5/27/2012 - 10:00 PM

I am a huge fan of the CNBC 1-hour documentaries like the Pepsi Challenge. They are not only interesting, but offer an in-depth look at the companies.

As an aside, I was approached about this story back in November 2011. I asked if there was any way to stay anonymous. Unfortunately (& understandably) the answer was no, so I declined the offer. However, I did suggest another wonderful JCA in the NYC area to contact about participating. Fingers crossed, she will be making an appearance on the news piece!!!

Will you be checking out Mickey Drexler's story on CNBC? Are you excited to see the inner-workings of J.Crew? Will you be recording the show, like I will?

  1. Kudos to you for being asked for an interview on JC! Speaks volumes about the work that you do for this community!!

Yes, I'll probably check out the show. I've got this down in my calendar to remind myself ;)

  2. great,
    will watch
will be interesting to see how they spin it. The recent one on Costco was positive. But then they don't play games with B/M vs. website pricing etc...

  3. Too bad they couldn't have used the silhouette shot for you, Alexis. You deserved to have been part of it if, esp. if they're talking to bloggers.

Thanks for the info.; just added to my calendar!

  6. Wooo, very exciting! Can't wait to watch! How utterly stupid that they wouldn't work with you to maintain your anonymity, though. Their loss.

  10. I will totally watch, I'm interested to hear what Mr. Drexler and the others interviewed have to say. Pretty cool that Anna Wintour lent some commentary! And kudos Alexis for being contacted to appear. It's too bad CNBC couldn't make it work with anonymity. I'm glad you volunteered another JCA, but it's a loss that your voice won't be heard.

  11. Thanks everyone for the nice words! :) It would have been nice to be included, but their producer said they could not shoot in silhouette for me. (Apparently they use that for only informants and criminals.) I was also told they did not use the JCA I recommended for the piece. Ah well! Still will be interested in seeing this. :)
