Weekly Share: Other JCrew-like Retailers

This is the weekly "Other JCrew-like Retailers" post (similar to the "Off On A Tangent" posts), where we can share our finds from other retailers that have offerings similar to J.Crew (like Anthropologie, LE Canvas, Gap, BR, Talbots, Ann Taylor, and the like.)

If you have recently encountered items that are similar to J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including experiences with certain merchandise pieces, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. Talbots is offering 20% off and free shipping.
Extra 5% off for making an in-store personal shopping appointment. Seems that no code is needed for the offer.

Only problem is, don't see anything of interest in the new catalog! Since this last Spring, Talbots seems to be heading back to more conservative styles.

  2. Baublebar has a "floral bib" that looks very simiar to the Tessellate necklace. Whether you love/hate Baublebar, I wish they hadn't added the dangly beads to the necklace.

    1. I'll second that - Gap has a really nice selection of button-downs right now. I also really like their new Sexy Boyfriend jeans/cords.

    2. I really want to like Gap's shirts, but the fit is incredibly unflattering on me. I bought several adorable flower print shirts last summer and I finally threw them out a couple weeks ago. The fabric was beautiful but the cut was loose and shapeless. I saw a picture of me wearing the shirt and I was appalled; I looked at least 20 pounds heavier! Not the look I want...

    3. I heartily agree with the reviews of the Gap Icon Fitted Boyfriend shirt. The shirt is made of oxford material, soft, thick enough that you don't have to wear a cami under it, and it's only $49.95 FP! I found it to be super flattering, and I'm definitely planning to buy the lavender color during the next promo.

I purchased the JCrew Boy shirt in classic white, and plan to return it this weekend. It's sheer, and became a wrinkly mess after wearing it for a half hour around the house.

Jeanne, I would definitely give the Gap another try. After a couple of years of so so junk at Gap and BR, I think they are stepping up their game. I will definitely be purchasing more this fall...

  4. I like Talbots from time to time for basics. I just purchased a ponte pencil skirt that is fabulous. The size 2P fits perfectly (I'm a size 2 in J. Crew but Talbots size 2 runs big IMO) and the length is also ideal. Since the skirt is on the longer side, the petite length is just where I like my skirts. I got grey and went a little crazy and also got candy apple red.

  5. I am wearing a Talbot's pencil skirt and heels today. Love! The skirt is still available and it is only $27.99. Check it out. Today they have free shipping with no minimum, too!

    1. That's a really cute skirt. I notice that Talbot's has a few other summer print skirts on clearance for only $17!

  6. Was in NYC over the weekend and made my first trip to Joe Fresh. Was only looking for some basic tees and found 4!! Wish they would have had white (all colors were decidedly fall) but got the tees and some gym socks for...$40!!! One style was on promo for $5! I tend to wear my tees into the ground so I am hesitant to spend a fortune. Hoping they hold up longer than JC!

    1. I have quite a few Joe pieces (some from a few years back) and have had no problems with quality for the most part (especially for the price). The babies/kids stuff is great - and SO cute.

For those of you new to the Joe brand - the line was started by Joseph Mimran (Club Monaco). Joe has become a staple for Canadians - started off in a grocery store of all places! :)

    2. StylishlySpoken, I have had cotton pj's from Joe from about 4 years ago and they are still in excellent shape, even though they get a lot of washing.

    3. I have a bunch of pieces from there for my son and they always look like new (and my son puts them to the test!) We also bought his winter boots there and they are the ONLY shoes that stayed nice enough to pass onto his little brother to be.
If anyone is in the central Jersey area there is a Joe Fresh at Bridgewater Commons Mall

    4. Joe Fresh is pretty good - I buy quite of lot of stuff for the kids there. The fabrics are sometimes kind of cheap but I am not asking for much, considering the rock bottom prices they are charging. The quality is very decent for the price - I have a pair of cropped dark denim jeans from them that I have been wear for a few years and they still look great.

    5. Kelly, do they have kids at that location? Thanks :)

    6. Yes! At least they did as of last Christmas - that's where my sister bought the boots for my son as well as the cutest sweater!

  7. StylishlySpoken's post about Joe - checked out the new fall stuff over the weekend. SO many cute things for women, but didn't have time to try anything on (potential option for the toothpick ankle zip are the Joe cords - the location I went to didn't have many sizes left). I did pick up some colored skinny cords for my daughter for $12. They had the cutest chunky knit sweaters, hats, jackets, etc for kids, too.

    1. I agrees they had many cute things, but I was a woman on a mission :) I really hope they do well and expand in the us. I was pleasantly surprised by the weight of the fabric and details on the tees I purchased, especially for the price.

They seem like a wonderful alternative to h&m or old navy. Similar price points but the store was well edited and very clean and organized.

  13. How does Boden sizing run? Tired of waiting for the ankle stretch skinnies to go on promo in my desired colors. I wear a 24 in J crew.

    2. For me, the Boden size chart is pretty spot on, but I've never tried their pants/denim, only skirts and dresses. I usually take a size 4 at Boden and a 2 at J.Crew in skirts, for what it's worth.

Also, with the DDUS promo code, you can get 20% off with free shipping and returns. I think the code is good through Sept. 6th. On the 7th, it switches to 15% off and then 10% on the 8th. HTH

  16. I have to put in a plug for Club Monaco - I have been finding some great pieces there recently. The quality is very good and lots of natural fibres - nearly every blouse I looked at was silk, no poly in sight! I bought two pairs of cropped pants last week, one pair in tropical wool, the other in stretch cotton/rayon blend. After trying several pairs, I have come to the conclusion that JC's café capri pants just don't work on my body type (which is boyish - no waist, minimal hips), but the Club Monaco pants are excellent quality and fit amazingly well.

    1. I can't wear J Crews cafe capri either. They gape at the back and the low rise just makes me look frumpy.
I will check out The Club. Carolyn from Vancouver

  17. Bit late to the game tonight, sigh, back to school time is always a difficult adjustment. :)

Anyhow, Boden is running a diminishing discount right now where many (but not all) items are 20% off with free ship and returns. I have direct link to that sale on my blog (but check your e-mail, too, as there may be links there).

I did a "picks" post, if you are interested.

  18. Flower Power, I always size up in Boden pants. That said, I recently bought the zip ankle skimmers in the purple shade and those fit fine in the size 8 long, which is what I would wear in J. Crew cafe capris. I think it may be because of the stretchy material they used in it, allowing my curves to fit better inside of them, unlike the non-stretch cottons they have used in the past.

    Hope that helps!

  19. Thanks to everyone for the Boden info! I ordered 2 cashmere crewnecks, one merino crewneck, a navy cropped pant, and a mint skinny jean. Crossing my fingers that they will fit!
