Weekly Share: Other JCrew-like Retailers

This is the weekly "Other JCrew-like Retailers" post (similar to the "Off On A Tangent" posts), where we can share our finds from other retailers that have offerings similar to J.Crew (like Anthropologie, LE Canvas, Gap, BR, Talbots, Ann Taylor, and the like.)

If you have recently encountered items that are similar to J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including experiences with certain merchandise pieces, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. Just got the Fair Isle turtleneck from Lands' End Canvas - it seems pretty Crew-like to me. Quality is good - the thickness is medium to heavy. The colors are beautiful. Price is good and I got with a 20% promo. http://www.landsend.com/products/womens-cotton-blend-fair-isle-turtleneck/id_260052

  2. One day sale over at Madewell - 30% off select Fall styles with code ONEFINEDAY.

If anyone has tried the new long-sleeve sweatshirt dress, I'd love a review, as it's included. I am also interested in the Coffeshop Cardigan and Fair Isle sweaters :)

    1. Crazy, they advertise items with discount until you put them in your cart. Then they show up as excluded from promo. WTF.

    2. JRS, strange - I wonder if that's a glitch? I had the coffeeshop cardigan in my cart last night, and the discount worked...

  3. Come ride the train...and ride it (woo woo)! The Factory train, that is.

New arrivals at Factory. The fair isle farmyard sweater minus the animals, suckered tartan shirt I was hoping would show up, plaid skimmers, their version of the Darby loafers, the usual snowflake tee, jammies, and slippers. New arrivals are marked at 30% off, use NEWNOW for free (Economy) shipping.

    1. I just saw the Factory version of the Darby loafers! Kind of excited!

    2. Placed my order. If it goes to 50% off again like last time, I'll just get PAs and they'll be stupid for not having it 50% off the first time (again).

    3. silver_lining - I'm driving the bus! I went today and tried on lots. I have 12 pics on my Insta. Full reviews coming over the next few days.

    4. Thanks Gigi! How was the sizing on the non-farm animal sweater? and the material? Thx!

    5. mack - TTS, maybe running a little bigger than retail, like Factory usually does. The fabric was soft. The orange was more electric in the Factory version. Will have fabric content when I do the review.

  4. Macy's charter club cashmere sweaters are very similar to the JCrew polkadot cashmere from last winter...and cheaper. A quick review on my blog if interested.

  5. 25% off with code SECRET on Ebates and 6% cash back, offer just for J.CREW. No minimum.

  6. Factory has the scallop trim mini now. So odd.

  7. Does anyone know the difference between the retail and factory versions of the Venus flytrap necklace? I am also looking at the version on a Modern Boutique website, anyone have experience with them? Also looking at retail pearl hammock necklace (mixing both pieces) and want to know if they're worth retail prices or should I look elsewhere. I don't have any J Crew jewelry experience. TIA

    1. The factory version has darker metal, I believe. I saw it IRL and looks really nice.

    2. Muffin, I have the Factory version. It is sparkly and lovely.

I often find Factory jewelry to be cheap-looking and inferior to Retail, especially the colored-stone items. Maybe it's because this one is crystal, but I like it very much.

    3. Thank you Rose & Ruffles! Just hoping to get the most for my $--since I don't think it will be a piece I use all the time.

    4. Muffin - I bought the Venus flytrap today. I've been looking at it online forever & was pleased with what I saw.

    5. Thanks Gigi! I'm looking to mix it with the pearl twisted hammock necklace. Way outside of my usual but I need some shaking up :-).

    6. It's even better in my opinion. And I hardly ever think that about Factory jewelry versus retail (most of the time it looks really cheap but I've definitely gotten some great jewels there too.) Gotta say--these days, retail jewelry is getting a run for it's money by the China imports that are DIRT CHEAP on Etsy etc. That has to be putting a ding in JC's major, major profit.

  8. Alexis, I hope this OK to share here and if not please let me know and I'll delete it.

My blog turned 5 this week and to celebrate I've teamed up with Anthropologie to give one lucky winner an appointment with their Head Personal Stylist Christina with a $1,000 Anthropologie Shopping Spree!

You can enter to win here. This contest runs through Sunday.

  9. JCAs, just a heads up for those Lands End shoppers. Check your credit card refunds. I have now had them stiff me twice on returns to a Lands End store. The receipt for the return is right, but when the actual charge goes back on the credit card, it's off by $5-10. First time, I thought it was a glitch, though I don't know how, but after hearing friends have the same issue, it just seems shady.

    1. I shopped at Lands End last winter and also had problems with returns and refunds not being credited accurately and promptly. It was so infuriating that I completely stopped shopping them. I throw their catalogs right into the recycling bin and don't even look at their website anymore.

    2. Hmmm . . . possible class action law suit. This is absolutely unlawful as a deceptive consumer practice.

  10. I know someone posted about this awhile ago, but what's the best way to clean the sloan BR pants? Is it dry clean? Thanks.

  11. I've shared a lot of J.Crew-like items in this post on my blog. Included this week are alternatives for the J.Crew Perfect shirt in tartan, Collection Jules dress in silk scarf foulard, and Mixed-media wrap skirt, as well as many others.

  12. If you're looking for an oversized white button-down similar to Madewell and don't want to wait till mid-November (or pay $75), I suggest Gap's boyfriend oxford shirt. It's always hard to tell what these are going to be like IRL, and I've tried my fair share. This one is crisp, long, and oversized but not too much. I don't like the versions where the shoulders and chest are just huge. The results are mixed (as most Gap reviews are) - I did not find it to be see through. I took my regular S and found it to be a perfect 'boyfriend' fit...I was swimming in a M. The current 40% promo brings it to $27.

  14. 40% off sale at Madewell! I love the deep discount, although I wish the free shipping minimum was lower for Canadians (free for US though!).

Anyways I managed to snag another easygoing tee (my favourite) and the denim shiftdress, then finally bit on the Penfield Lavic Fleece Jacket since I can always return it and it is pretty much sold out in the tan colour.

    1. I agree with you about the minimums for shipping to Canada...at least we don't incur a premium on the prices...that's one thing I definitely appreciate about Madewell vs. J. Crew.

I was happy to see that the Log Cabin cardigan was finally on sale. Even though it was final sale, I purchased it, along with a Journal Cardigan (also FS, but I tried it on in store a long while ago), as well as the Birdsketch Silk Cargo.

    2. R, I missed the Log Cabin cardigan - it is now sold out. Would you please let me know what the sale price was? The website is showing the original price of $135. Thanks!

    3. That's very true R, I don't look forward to the day that they open a store in Canada and the online prices are jacked up!

shopalot, if I'm not mistaken it was $114 before the discount (I also considered it because I have a cardigan in the same marled wool from a few years ago that I have worn to death. I decided it still has enough life left in it though!)

    4. Thank you so much! With the 40% off, it would be a decent price. Hopefully the local store has it.

      Delete
    5. Sorry for the late reply shopalot! Rebekah is correct - it was $114.99 (I'm assuming, as my invoice is for $68.99 with the discount). I also noticed the Acorn colour pop-backed in a few other sizes this morning, so hopefully if your local store is out, more will be coming.

  15. @MS, I dry clean my sloan pants. I would have attempted washing them but my mother-in-law (who works for BR) owns them as well and told me she ruined a pair running them through the wash. That was enough to turn me off from trying. I've never had luck with the dryel route so dry cleaning it is...
